HDMI outlets: purpose, interface description

HDMI is the standard for connecting various high-definition multimedia devices. This interface is installed on video adapters of personal computers, monitors and modern TVs. HDMI-standard provides the transfer of any incompressible video signal of high quality, as well as data for 3D-TV. In addition, the interface is capable of transmitting eight channels of digital audio information. HDMI-technology contains a protocol to protect data from unauthorized copying. This interface is capable of supporting an Ethernet connection, whose speed is 100 Mbps.

HDMI sockets and their types

There are 5 types of these connectors:

1. The most common type today is the A-type, which was adopted in 2002 in the specification 1.0. Such HDMI-outlets have 19 contacts, they are able to support the digital interface DVI-D through the adapter. This technology can transmit video signals as HDTV (1920 × 1080 resolution).

2. The B-type is adopted simultaneously with the first, but at present it is practically not used. These HDMI outlets contain 29 contacts and are also capable of supporting a DVI-D interface. They have a capacity that is twice the A-type. In addition, they can connect devices whose expansion is 3840x2400 (WQUXGA).

3. The C-type was adopted in 2006 (it has the second name - mini-HDMI) in specification 1.3. These connectors are designed for portable devices. The C-type connectors have 19 contacts, can be connected to the A-type through the adapter.

4. The D-type was adopted in 2009 (the second name is micro-HDMI) in specification 1.4. These HDMI outlets also have 19 pins. This type of connector is used in cell phones, video cameras, tablets and other similar devices. The size of the micro-HDMI is slightly smaller than the micro-USB and half as much as the mini-HDMI.

5. E-type connectors, adopted in 2009, are intended for internal communication of car audio and video systems. This interface is characterized by increased resistance to changes in temperature and vibration.

Since 2006, HDMI cables have been divided into two categories: high-speed and standard. The latter support a frequency of 75 MHz and provide a throughput of 2.25 Gbit / s. And high-speed ones work at 340 MHz (10.2 Gbit / s) and support increased frequency and color depth.

HDMI Outlet: Connect

Consider the pinout of the most popular to date HDMI-outlets (this is A-type and C-type). As already mentioned above, both of these interfaces have 19 contacts, only their location differs. In the A-type, the conclusions are arranged in two rows, and in the C-type, in one. The purpose of the contacts is shown in the photo. The numbering of pins in the C-type goes in order, and in the A-type the upper row is odd, the bottom row is even.

Conclusion

There are many adapters for the HDMI interface. There are various options for connecting between types of HDMI (for example, the adapter HDMI-outlet - HDMI-outlet is shown in the photo above). Also, there are adapters for connecting to other interfaces, for example, with DVI-D, and many others. However, when using them, remember that this standard, although it does not describe the maximum length of the cable, but, as practice shows, it should not exceed 15 meters. For signal transmission over long distances, it is recommended to use repeaters, signal amplifiers, as well as active and fiber-optic cables.
