The cities with the most rainfall in the world

Some of the rainiest places on the planet are in remote areas where a human foot never steps, but there are many settlements that suffer from a lot of rainfall every year. In most of these cities there is a tropical climate. While in some areas rain can only be in certain seasons, in other places there are showers throughout the year. Here are the eight most rainy cities, also they are known all over the world and as places to be avoided during the planning of summer vacations.

Kibdo, Colombia

Kibdo is the largest city in the department of Choco, despite its population - just a little more than 100,000 people. Here there is a staggering amount of precipitation - about 8 130 mm per year! Kibdo is located near the mountains, in western Colombia, where there is no dry season at all. Rain goes almost every day (304 days a year on average). Nevertheless, in the cold season (in December) more rain falls in the form of drizzle, while in the warm season (April) there are more thunderstorms.

In March, the smallest amount of precipitation is recorded, but still rains are on average 15 days per month. Strangely enough, despite the large amount of precipitation, Kibdo often suffers a shortage of useful water due to the lack of reliable water storage systems.

Monrovia, Liberia

In the north-western part of Africa is the capital of Liberia - Monrovia - with a population of more than one million people, who are flooded every year. Here, approximately 5 140 mm of precipitation falls every year! This figure roughly coincides with the number of rainy days. The rainfall season in Monrovia lasts from May to October, but June and July are the wettest. At this time, many roads become impassable due to the pits filled with mud. The period from December to February is still very wet, although there are rare showers.

Hilo, Hawaii

Despite the beautiful images of wavering palm trees, beaches and sunlight that can be seen on the Internet and handouts, the Hawaiian Islands suffer from a huge number of downpours. Part of the island of Maui, where the national park, the mountains, sees about 3 000 mm of precipitation a year, while in other parts of the islands there are all 4 000 mm. Hilo in general can be called a city-winner in this respect, since during the year for 272 days here there are rains.

Mangalore, India

With a population of just over 400,000 people, Mangalore is by no means the most populous city in India, but at the same time there is the largest amount of precipitation, for the year they fall around 3 800 mm. It is a city located on the Arabian Sea, on the west coast of India, where the rivers Netravati and Gurapura meet. And although the amount of precipitation here is considerable, this is by no means the rainiest place in India. Northeastern India Meghalaya is home to the two most rainy villages in the world, with 4,600 mm of rain every year.

Buenaventura, Colombia

Buenaventura - one of the western cities of Colombia - is more than 100 km to the south of its rainy "sister", Kibdo. The population of the city is more than 300 000 inhabitants. The city is located near the Pacific Ocean, there are about 3 000 mm of precipitation every year. The period from January to April is the driest, at the same time in the rainiest months (September and October) the city receives more rainfall than the whole of the USA for the whole year.

Cayenne, French Guiana

Cayenne, the capital of the only francophone state in South America, is located north of the equator and has a tropical coastal climate. The city is located off the Atlantic coast. It is famous not only for its cayenne pepper and rich history, but also as one of the rainiest cities in South America - with 3,800 mm of rain every year and 212 rainy days. Despite the fact that residents observe rain here throughout the year, two seasons of showers are distinguished: from December to January and from April to mid-July.

Belem, Brazil

It is estimated that precipitation in the form of rain falls here in the range of 2,800 mm per year. And although Belen does not suffer from such showers as other countries of South America, rains here go on average 251 days a year. It is a port city with a population of about 143,000 people. Hidden in the most northern part, just below the equator, Belen is located closer to such a rainy city as Cayenne than to Rio de Janeiro.

The season of showers in Belém is usually observed between December and May, while February and March are the two rainiest months of the year.

Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia

Situated to the north of the equator with a tropical climate, Malaysia is one of the rainiest countries on the planet. Kuala Terengganu, a city in the north-west with a population of about 285,000 people, suffers from 2,000 mm of precipitation year after year. The modern city of Kuala-Terengganu experienced extreme flooding in December 2014. Most of the precipitation is observed from November to January, although the rest of the time the city remains hot and humid.

Now you know the cities with the most rainfall, so reasonably plan your vacation!
