Winter Palace in St. Petersburg: magnificent luxury
The Winter Palace is rightly considered the most significant landmark of the city of St. Petersburg. The building, which is presented to our view today, is by no means the first building on this site. The Winter Palace itself was built for 8 years (1754-1762). At present, the landmark is an example of the famous Elizabethan baroque and attracts guests from all over the world with its splendor.
Anna Ioannovna, the new empress, found the building too small and insisted on perestroika. The famous architect Rastrelli designed a new building, which was completed in 1735. In 1739, the third Winter Palace in St. Petersburg hosted the solemn ceremony of betrothal of Princess Anne Leopoldovna and Anton Ulrich. In 1752, the power passed to Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, who also did not like the appearance of the palace. At the beginning of the year 1752, she bought a few more houses near the building, and Rastrelli began to build new buildings. After some time the empress decided to increase the height of the palace, as a result of which he was dismantled with the purpose of erecting a new Winter Palace.
In 1837, the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg survived a fire that was extinguished for more than three days. In 1880, a bomb was detonated in the palace, the purpose of which was the assassination of Alexander II. As a result, only the sentries suffered.
The Winter Palace (St. Petersburg) has the shape of a square. Its facades overlook the Neva and the Palace Square. In the center of the main facade is the main arch. In the Winter Palace - more than a thousand rooms, each of which is more solemn and more magnificent than another. Currently, the building of the palace is the Small Hermitage.
