Windows Commands: use the console wisely

Sometimes the GUI is not available on the remote server, or you need to enter a control code with administrator privileges. In this case, the Windows console commands will come in handy. With their help, you can restore the system, gain access to the necessary programs, enable the safe mode option for the next OS launch, etc. The command line itself can be called in the "Run" dialog box, which is located inside the "Start" menu.

If you prefer using keyboard shortcuts, use Win + R to launch the Run dialog box. Knowing the command you need, you can start the Windows snap-in or any system utility. It is enough just to type it correctly and press Enter. All the commands of the Windows console can be found easily, here we will not give a complete list. Instead, we'll tell you about the most interesting and popular ones:

  • Devmgmt.msc

With this Windows command, you can open the Device Manager. This service displays to the user a detailed report about everything that is installed on his computer. The names of all installed components and all devices connected to the system are displayed here. You can also check if everything is OK with the drivers, and what versions are currently used. To check the versions, double click on the name of the desired device and in the new opened window select the appropriate tab "Driver". In Device Manager, it's useful to look right after installing a new operating system, in order to check whether the system found a "common language" with all devices. If there are no question marks or exclamation marks, then everything is in order. Otherwise, you need to find the appropriate driver for the device by the device code.

  • Powercfg.cpl

The execution of this Windows command will cause the component responsible for the optimization of energy consumption. Power management can solve such problems as overly quick discharge of the laptop battery or an annoying transition to sleep after a few minutes of downtime. Here you can also set a password for security when waking up. High performance and energy savings are in inverse proportion. If the laptop is often running on battery power, you can increase the maximum operating time by reducing productivity, if desired. Conversely, if it is almost always connected to the network, why not increase the speed of work?

  • Perfmon / res

After typing this line and pressing the Enter button, the Resource Monitor window appears on the screen. This can be very useful if the system starts to slow down a lot. So you can easily identify that "eats" the memory resources and processor power, and immediately stop the process of this process. In addition, it will be interesting to learn some interesting information about the operation of the system.

  • Services.msc

After entering this command Windows will display a full list of absolutely all services. By default, the OS loads dozens of unnecessary local services that slow down the system and are unlikely to be useful. Some of them can be deactivated, and some of them can be disabled altogether.

  • Psr

This code appeared only in the seventh version of Windows. It is useful in case of frequent occurrence of the same system error. This command allows you to activate the recording of actions to reproduce the problem. After the "Start recording" button is pressed, the application will take screenshots of all the elements on which the user will click the mouse. Then they can be sent to the email address of the computer repair expert or the program developer.

  • Regedit

It is designed to start the Registry Editor. It is useful for cleaning the system from an incorrectly deleted or old program, as well as to disable the autorun items (Run and RunOnce keys)

  • Msconfig

Using this very useful Windows command, you control the autorun and the way the system boots. Here you can enable safe mode and configure various additional system boot options, such as timeout, diagnostic startup, disabling startup items, etc.
