Each mother during the pregnancy or after childbirth wondered how to swaddle the baby correctly? It seems that it is quite simple. But when you unfold the baby, he immediately bends the legs in his lap, spreads them to the sides. When you try to straighten them, the kid shows unexpected energy, resists your actions. Here the child is absolutely right, since the physiological, natural posture is the most useful for him. How to wrap a child so that it does not hurt him?

The swaddling process requires careful adherence to the rules. Tight swaddling, when using the baby's legs and hands are stretched along the body, hinders the breathing and digestion of the baby, interferes with movement, prevents the normal development of muscles, and can cause dislocation of the thigh in children with congenital hypoplasia of the hip joints. For this reason, many doctors advise mothers to use a wide swaddling, which allows the baby to maintain a natural posture for him.

Widespread swaddling is also recommended as a means of soothing a child. After all, with such a swaddling, the posture of the newborn is very similar to his habitual position in the mother's abdomen. And this gives a feeling of security and comfort.

How correctly to implement a wide swaddling?

  1. Find a convenient place for swaddling crumbs. It can be a changing table, a wide bed or a regular table covered with a clean diaper.
  2. Place the baby on a changing seat. Put on it two turtles with long closed sleeves: one - calico, the second - flannel. The first should be wrapped around the back, bend and spread on the back. The second is smelling on your chest and also folding. After that, take the baby in your arms and spread the diaper on the table.
  3. The upper part of the diaper is tight, but not too tight, wrap the chest of the crumb at the level of the armpits. Hands leave the karapuza free.
  4. One of the lower edges of the diaper wraps one of the baby's legs. Do the same with the second lower edge of the diaper. This is necessary in order to avoid friction between the legs of the baby with each other.
  5. The lower part of the diaper should be wrapped around the baby's legs so that it leaves them free to move.
  6. One upper end of the diaper is bent under the back of the baby, and the remaining end is placed in the formed pocket to fasten the diaper on the baby.
  7. There is another variant of wide swaddling - together with a diaper. On the swaddling surface, put a diaper folded diagonally in half. Its right angle should be located from the bottom, and sharp angles - on the sides.
  8. The left hip of the child is wrapped with the left angle of the diaper, the right one by the right angle. At the same time, the position of the child's spaced legs should not be changed. The lower end of the diaper is wrapped upward, reaching the level of the belly button. This version of the diaper will eliminate the rubbing of the baby's legs.
  9. At the end of the process, lower the edge of the large diaper wrap up to the level of the underarms of the child and continue to swaddle in the usual way.

Widespread swaddling is best used after it was prescribed by the pediatrician as a prophylaxis, as well as treatment of hip dysplasia. Self-medication can harm the health of crumbs. Sometimes, with a wide swaddle, instead of a folded diaper, a Frei pad is used , specially designed for this procedure.

There is a belief that tightening and straightening the baby's legs is necessary so that they do not become crooked. This is a myth, and swaddling here has absolutely nothing to do with it. The cause of curvature of the legs is often rickets. The local doctor will certainly inform you what preventive measures should be taken to avoid the development of the disease in the child.
