Who sleeps from animals?

Animals, like people, like to sleep and use for this any convenient opportunity. They also have dreams, probably each of us watched his pet, when his paws, whiskers tremble in his sleep, some sounds are being issued. And who is asleep standing out of the animals?

First, they are herd individuals. They can sleep lying down, reclining, standing with their eyes open or closed. These animals get enough sleep in a short time (only 3-4 hours), the rest of the time they are dumbfounded. And dreams they dream only when they are in a lying position.

It has always been believed that horses sleep standing, but this is not entirely true. A deep sleep in horses comes only when they lie, and while standing on their feet, they doze. They take 6-8 hours to sleep, and only 2-3 hours for sleep.

Of those animals who are asleep standing, no one can fully surrender to sleep in this position. This is due to the fact that they have a deep sleep only when they feel completely safe. They need to immediately get out of the way when the first danger arises. That's why, for the rest of the time, there is nothing left for an animal like to sleep standing up, or rather, to doze off.

The same applies to cows, sheep, elephants and giraffes. In elephants, old individuals like to rest standing, while they lay their tusks on the branches of a tree. For rest they have 3 hours, but the whole herd never sleeps at the same time. Always remain responsible guardians for security, which are then replaced by those already rested.

But giraffes can do with one doze for several weeks. They stick their heads between branches and, thanks to the muscles of their necks, fix their body. In this condition, they can take a nap for 20 minutes. And if the giraffe decided to sleep, he would lie on the rocks, and wrap his neck around his legs.

Still others who sleep asleep are birds. For example, pelicans and herons. They can sink into a dream, standing in the water on one leg and hiding a beak under the wing. Many birds fall asleep on a perch or branch, clinging firmly to the paws. The fact is that the muscles of the birds are arranged in such a way that they do not relax during rest, but, on the contrary, they compress even more. Thanks to this, the feathers hold fast and do not fall from the branch.

But migratory birds have their own peculiarity of sleep. When they make a long flight, they practically do not take the time to rest. Just every 15 minutes one of the birds flies into the middle of the pack and begins to doze off. At this time, she slightly moves her wings, thereby supporting herself in the air. And her airflow, created by all birds flying with her, carries her. Then it is replaced by another individual who wants to rest.

Bats can also be attributed to those who sleep standing, but only upside down. For them, this is an ideal position, so that in case of danger, take off right away. The fact is that they can not fly from the ground, since they do not have enough power to develop the required take-off speed. Here they have to sleep in limbo.

In principle, many animals can nap while standing, and even this is peculiar to a person. But according to the duration of sleep, the record holders are koalas, they spend 22 hours a day on it. Dolphins and whales never fully fall asleep. They always have one of the cerebral hemispheres awake. They need it so that they do not pass a breath in their sleep, otherwise the mammal may suffocate.

All living beings on our planet are asleep, but they do it differently. Someone sleeps at night, someone in the afternoon, someone suffices for this one minute, and someone hibernates for a few months. In any case, each creature takes away the amount of time it needs to rest.
