What is the Baty trail? The legend of the city of Kitezh

There are a lot of places on the Earth, which are surrounded by a secret with seven seals. They excite the imagination of man, fuel him with legends and speculation. And they also convey the spirit of the people who live there or once lived. On the territory of Russia, one of these places is Lake Svetloyar, at the bottom of which lies a ghost town, and Baty's trail leading to it. But first things first.

Traditions of antiquity

Let's see what the Baty trail is. The legend of the city of Kitezh tells that in the distant past, when Christianity had just arrived on the territory of Kievan Rus, the clear Prince George Vsevolodovich built a glorious city near the Volga River - Little Kitezh. At some distance from it on the shore of a picturesque lake, he built another city - Big Kitezh. When the Mongolo-Tatars came to these lands, they first attacked a smaller settlement, but the roads to the great hail could not be found. Brutally torturing one of the prisoners, the military leader of the Horde recognized the secret path. On that path they came to a wonderful lake and surrounded Kitezh. Local residents refused to surrender, but when the invaders went to storm, they did not resist. Bells rang in the city, and sources sprang from under the earth, which gradually filled the city. The Mongols retreated before an unprecedented miracle, and the uninhabited city was resting on the bottom of Svetloyar. The road through which the Horde passed, is now known as the Baty trail.

Origins of the legend

So, what is Baty's trail, it is already clear. And like with the legend everything is clear: people who survived the brutal invasion wanted to believe that somewhere there is a city that did not give up, did not submit, remained true to its traditions. This supported their patriotic spirit and gave them hope. However, some researchers have questioned that the legend was born in the thirteenth century. They assume that it appeared much earlier.

What is the Baty trail? The path to something hidden, miraculously saved from the cruelty of the Mongol khan. But, perhaps, the name of Batu stuck to a more ancient legend? The pre-Christian period of ancient Rus is dark and poorly studied by modern scientists. However, there is accurate information that Lake Svetloyar, located in the Nizhny Novgorod region among dense forests in the interfluve between Vetluga and Kerzhenets, and the surrounding area were the center of pagan faith. This is mentioned by the Slavs of the tribe of the Berendeys, who lived here from time immemorial.

Even if you look at the very name of the reservoir, it becomes clear that it is dedicated to the deity. "Yar" is an abbreviation on behalf of Yarila-sun, and "light" is derived from "bright, pure, righteous". Who knows, maybe there is a city in the lake that does not want to bow to the new god? It is for certain known that the great Christian centers were located on the sites of the largest pagan temples. But they were also brutally destroyed, washed from the face of the Earth.

Mysterious Kitezh

Now everyone knows what the Baty trail is. About the city in which she once led, is mentioned in the "Star Book of Kolyada" - an ancient source of that period. And the very name of the settlement could have been formed on behalf of the magic half-horse-half-man (centaur?) Of Kitovras, who was born here. And let the names of mythical creatures and ancient gods be forgotten, replaced in due course by the names of Orthodox saints, the place itself remained and caused people to invisible force. But only occasionally the sound of bells comes from the water surface, as if coming from a depth. Every traveler can listen, and maybe he is lucky to hear this elusive sound. Only is it worth it, because he warns about trouble - death, war, disaster?

Stories of eyewitnesses

What is the Baty trail and what secret is hidden at the depth of Lake Svetloyar? This issue worries and scientists, not just romantic enthusiasts. Inhabitants of villages in this area tell of a ghost town, which only sometimes reveals its secret. The one who gets there either does not return at all, or changes greatly externally and internally, and then dies after a while. He even identifies them with the city of the dead, the abode of ancestors who long ago left this land.

Tales also say that in the waters of the lake there is a large fish or monster that people do not touch, but only frightens almost to death. At night, it goes ashore, as evidenced by numerous traces of large sizes. Probably, this is the keeper of the mystery of the mysterious Kitezh.

Place Studies

In 2013, July 7, a unique lake began researching Dmitry Schiller. Divers examined the bottom of the reservoir, took samples of mud and bottom water, and took pictures. The first dive was eleven meters deep, further - even deeper. The water in Svetloyar is cold (two degrees in total), but visibility is good - four meters. They drew attention to the fact that in the investigated place the bottom is covered with silt in a thick layer, but it looks quite unusual, like a cloud, dense and mobile. In this substance divers found a lot of trunks of drowned trees. Their pieces were sent to the dendrochronological examination, which should give an answer about the age of the breed. Perhaps the find will shed light on the secrets of the city of Kitezh and Lake Svetloyar, tell us what Baty trail is. The answer, as always, is hidden under the dust of history.
