What is a half-timbered column

Many architectural designs that surround us are equipped with such details as a half-timbered column. People who are not familiar with construction terms do not always understand the essence and purpose of this detail, but in fact its role is very great. Such a beam is built not in every building, it all depends on the structure and the project. So now let's look at those types of structures in which a half-timbered column should be present, and define its basic functions and tasks.

To begin with, it should be understood that such beams do not perform a supporting function and are not designed to withstand the entire weight of the building. They are built exclusively in such buildings where there are spans that need to be strengthened and made more durable. In this case, each half-timbered column has its place and is very significant, because it is worth removing one such part from the building, there is a risk of destruction of the entire structure. As a rule, these parts are installed at the same distance from each other, their mass and endurance are identical. Such constructions make it possible to simplify the process of building any building, and further strengthen it and prolong its existence.

The most common are now half-timbered columns of industrial buildings, warehouses and hangars. Most often, such structures have a very large area, and sometimes the standard walls and foundation do not withstand the load exerted by the ceilings and rafters. In such cases it is the auxiliary beams installed perpendicular to the ground that can absorb the shakiness and unreliability of the building. If the construction is not too large, then the beams can be erected only for safety, or for protection from winds and hurricanes.

It is inconceivable to build frame beams without a foundation, in which they are fixed. It is thanks to him that these designs perform their functions and do not bend under the weight of the overlap. The foundation under half-timbered columns is made of solid concrete. In this case, each of them is immersed in a glass approximately one meter (depending on the height of the building and the weight of the floors). It is important to properly install the joists and correctly fill them with a mixture. They must be strictly parallel to each other, do not swing and do not bend. Only in this case the building will be strengthened and protected from winds and other external destructive factors.

It is important to know that a half-timbered column can be hidden under a cosmetic finish, or it can be an independent decor element. In cottages and apartments of a new type, such beams are often located in corner rooms, on loggias and balconies. In ancient buildings, such consoles can fully or partially protrude, and be decorated with sculpture, pattern or stucco.

The half-timber column is an element that must be competently designed and assembled, correctly located and beautifully decorated. Only with these simple but important conditions can you achieve the desired result, which will manifest itself in the strength of the building, its durability and beauty.
