What if there is not enough disk space?

When using a computer quite often the user gets a problem when the system writes: "there is not enough space on drive C". In no event can this message be ignored, and in most cases it will not be possible to ignore it (even if there is such a desire). The appearance of this warning is due to the clogging of local disk C and requires immediate user intervention.

Sometimes the message that there is not enough disk space is due to an improper partitioning of sectors on the hard disk when the local disk is too small to be allocated. Especially often this situation occurs in Windows 7 and higher users, since they habitually leave under the C drive with small volumes, not taking into account the fact that new systems require much more space. If there was 30-40 GB for Windows XP and programs, then for the new versions of the Microsoft shell program, this amount should be doubled, otherwise it will often be necessary to solve the problem with the appearance of the "insufficient disk C" notification.

If there is not enough space for the system, then it would be desirable to re-install and redistribute space on the hard disk. In the event that it is impossible (for example, an office computer that can not be "touched") or the reason is contamination, a number of cleaning actions should be carried out.

First of all, you need to clean the system of all temporary files that create programs, browsers and Windows itself. For these purposes, you can install any of the available free programs. Quite often the amount of such "system garbage" reaches indecently large volumes, which provokes the appearance of the notice "not enough disk space".

Then you should carefully review the download folders, documents and the desktop for old and already unnecessary files, images, etc. If you have any doubts, you can not delete them, but, for example, transfer them to another local disk with more space .

If the methods described above did not help and the system still complains that there is not enough disk space, it will be necessary to thoroughly check the installed programs. Some of them, for example, Photoshop, take up a lot of space and can be transferred to another disk, which will not affect their functioning, but it will free up space for working with the C drive. In case of obsolete and unnecessary programs, they should be disposed of.

In order to eliminate the "insufficient disk space" notification, you can perform some actions with the system, namely:

- turn off the sleep mode;

- Move the swap file.

In total, these two actions will give at least 4 GB of free space. To disable sleep mode, select "Power" from the control panel. There you need to find "Monitor off settings". Then you should select the "never" option, which is responsible for putting the computer into sleep mode. Then you need to open the command line (combination "Win + R") and register there "powercfg - h off", confirming the action by pressing the "Enter" key.

To move the paging file , you should find the "Performance" item located in the system properties, which you can select by right-clicking on the "My Computer" icon. There is an "Advanced" tab on which to open the "Options". Typically, the system is automatically configured to reserve the space on the C drive. The user must remove this disk. To do this, you need to select it and set the confirmation in the "No paging file" item, confirming the action by clicking on the "Set" option. You can choose a different disk and install the paging file on it. The computer must be rebooted for the changes to take effect.
