What are the doors for the fireplace? How to make a fireplace door yourself

In the operation of stoves and fireplaces, fire safety is a priority. The doors for the fireplace allow you to protect yourself from accidental sparks and embers that have entered the room from the furnace. And if they regulate the intensity of fuel combustion and draft in furnaces, they are arranged in fireplaces to protect themselves from fire. It should be visible, in the opposite case, the essence of the hearth disappears. As he heats the room, and also gives the opportunity to admire the living fire.

Doors: Construction

To create a panoramic effect, glass doors for fireplaces are used. The glass around the perimeter is surrounded by a metal frame in which the gasket from the heater is located. In fact, it is transparent ceramics, therefore, it can withstand heating up to 800 ˚C. The configuration of the door depends on the style of the enclosure, while it occupies the entire or entire front area of the furnace.

Glass can be of different sizes: medium, small, large. In this case, geometric shapes are made as follows:

  • Rectangular;
  • Arched;
  • Trapezoidal;
  • Flat or convex;
  • Round, oval.

Closing doors with glass is also possible in different versions. Among them the most convenient:

  • Double hinged (two leaves in the middle are connected, hinged on the hinges at the sides);
  • Hinged (one leaf is on the side hinges);
  • Closed up vertically.

Structurally, the doors for furnaces and fireplaces can consist of one or more rigid parts connected together. Each of them is installed in the sash, previously framed by a sealant. Panoramic glass is the most convenient for watching the flame. They are not divided into parts and are practically equal in size to the size of the leaf. This design is suitable for a large chimney of a country house, which is equipped with a chimney design.

Operation of the door

If your fireplace works on wood, then the soot begins to settle on its walls with time. The situation is aggravated by coniferous logs in that they actively release resin. On the walls they settle in the form of soot. Therefore, the doors for the fireplace mutate and become dirty. To combat this phenomenon, a self-cleaning system has been created.

This is an air curtain, formed by the flow of air coming through the slit. In the upper part it gets cold and falls down. Thus, the glass door is not to be cleaned.

Forged doors for a fireplace

It should be noted that the materials of the wings are now presented with equal requirements, regardless of the shape of the fireplace body. If it has an angular shape, and the leaf is figured, the metal can make up its main part. For this, cast iron or refractory steel is used, and the glasses in this embodiment have the form of a stained-glass window. What makes it possible to combine a variety of texture and tinted glass.

The door for the fireplace must be always closed to prevent further ignition of the floor. If a bio fireplace is used (this is typical of an apartment), then it is made from the same materials: metal and glass ceramics. To the fittings of various varieties of leaflets, usually include handles that can be removable, hinged loops, locking mechanisms, fasteners.

Metal door

Today, very often you can see fireplaces, the wings of which are made of thermo-glass. The first door for the fireplace itself was made of metal. The difference between these structures is that they could not be integral. An important feature is also in the form of doors. The case in this case is that the fireplace was able to heat the room solely due to the heat radiation, which required an open hearth.

The advantages of metal doors are their visual appeal. There are several shortcomings. In such doors, there is practically no protection against emerging smoke. In addition, they will obscure the view of the fire, which will deprive him of special charm. Fire-resistant doors for a fireplace made of metal from others differ also in that they interfere with the radiation of heat. And this is not particularly welcomed by the owners of the house. Although the doors do not interfere very much, because the metal can be heated and then give a little heat to the room.

Fireplace doors from glass

Glass today is a very fashionable material. It was widely spread in the 20th century. And the appearance of refractory glass changed completely the views on the decoration of the fireplace. This new material allowed to observe the flame. In addition, it became possible to control the combustion, to supplement it, to change, without checking every time with the help of a permanent opening of the doors.

It is possible to see among facades glass facades, different in character: convex, prismatic, angular, three- and two-sided - whatever the choice of the consumer. They will not completely hide the flame from the eyes, but quite the contrary - they can increase the viewing angle.

Types of glass

Today, glass doors for fireplaces have become so popular that several varieties have appeared among them.

Strained glass

It is made of simple glass by the hardening method: it is heated to the temperature causing softening, after which it is cooled very quickly. Due to such a painstaking work, glass is able to acquire the characteristics that are necessary. There is resistance to high temperatures (400 degrees). In addition, along with such a parameter, resistance to various mechanical damages occurs. This figure is 2.5 times higher than that of a simple glass coating.

Quartz glass

It is made of silica (quartz or sand), not glass. Other impurities are not added at all, or at least. This glass has the most elementary composition, but the production technology is highly complex. It has a very high melting point, due to which it is difficult to process and process. But today it is increasingly used, making doors for the fireplace. It is thanks to the high efforts that were invested in the production that this glass has a high price, being considered one of the most expensive.

Borosilicate glass

This glass is made from a large amount of silica with the obligatory addition of boron oxide. This chemical element is famous for being able to provide a low melting point, which means that the glass will have plasticity. Already the finished product is able to have a high degree of heat resistance (about 800 degrees). In addition, it will be endowed with a special mechanical strength, 5 times greater than that of a simple glass. That is why the doors for the fireplace are so often made of it.

Manufacturing of doors

These works are not very complicated, therefore, they can be performed by a layman. Specific skills and knowledge you will not need. Production takes place in this order:

  1. On the necessary parameters a corner is cut out, which is laid out on absolutely flat surface. Then it is inserted into the mold.
  2. The uniformity and correctness of joints is verified by means of a square.
  3. The joints of the elements are fixed with each other by welding.
  4. Remains of welding are cleaned.
  5. On the metal sheet, a frame is installed, and also marks on the sheet of the contour of the door.
  6. If the thickness of the metal is about 2 mm, then you do not need to brew a separate frame. Now its size is drawn - a little more than the inner one. The sheet will lie overlap, so he can protect the room from getting smoke.
  7. The metal element is cut out by a cutting circle and a bulgarian.
  8. Curtains are welded to the frame, after which a pre-prepared element is exposed. Then the accuracy of placing the curtains is checked, as well as their further tack against the metal.
  9. The welding surfacing is removed, after which the handle is fixed.

Now it is clear that it is quite possible to make a door with your own hands. This product can be made by anyone. It can be exploited for a very long time.

Summing up, it can be noted that any type of door is good in its own way. For fireplaces materials are selected depending on the conditions of their operation. Consequently, this task is decided by the manufacturer of the fireplace.
