Weekends and public holidays in May

In 2012, Vladimir Putin, then still prime minister, proposed to shorten the long Christmas holidays in favor of the May elections during the presidential campaign. A survey of civilians showed that compatriots are in solidarity with the opinion of the president. Since then, the winter holidays are limited to seven days, and those days off (Saturday and Sunday) are added to the May holidays. Thus, the holidays in May, together with the weekend, are almost half a month.

Opinions of politicians about the May holidays

However, not all deputies are satisfied with this holiday schedule. Some of them believe that the New Year holidays are a much less significant reason for the national holiday than the Victory Day. This part of the politicians advocates the reduction of New Year's holidays to four days, and the remaining three days are invited to link the holidays - May 1 and May 9.

Other politicians believe that an abundance of days off affects the economy of the country, because employers have to pay for these forced downtime. The idea of refusing New Year holidays is put forward by the party of Gennady Zyuganov for many years, but so far he finds no support among other members of the government. However, these are not the most radical proposals for changing the length of the holidays for adults. Sergei Smirnov (director of the Higher School of Economics) generally offers to leave days off only two days a year: Christmas and May 9.
