We travel through Austria: the sights of Graz

Modern tourists and travelers are no longer surprised by the exoticism of Thailand, Cyprus or Nepal. African safari, active volcanoes, majestic Jomolungma, of course, are interesting and fascinating. But the old Europe still attracts lovers of knight castles, ancient works of art, well-groomed landscapes, equipped in the spirit of classicism. In this respect, Austria is one of the brightest examples, and Graz is one of its largest cities.

Graz: history and modernity

Lovers of American fighters and action games, no doubt, as the main attraction of Graz will note that this city is the homeland of the Terminator - the great Arnold Schwarzenegger. Of course, the townspeople are very, very proud of this fact, respecting the merits of their compatriot in the cinema. However, it is not with the famous movie actor that the glorious history of these places begins.

Austria, Graz, are associated with connoisseurs with the two-faced Janus. The fact is that the old and the modern have intertwined in this city and the surroundings in the most surprising way. It stands on the picturesque river Moore, majestic bearing its waters amidst green meadows and hills, and the landscape itself resembles a canvas of a pastoral picture. Around - small villages in which, despite the age of modernity and technological progress, the national spirit and color remained. And when you walk through the old quarters of the city, and then you go into the village, it seems that time has stopped. Such a special sense of time, a special atmosphere - also a kind of Graz attractions. An animated youth and wise years of maturity are found here at every step, without interfering with each other.

In written sources about Graz first mentioned in the 12th century - then it was still a small settlement. But in a hundred years or so, it gets the status of a city with all the ensuing privileges, and in the Middle Ages it becomes the capital city of the province of Styria. Later, in the 16th century, Graz turns into the capital of all Upper Austria. Over the next several centuries, the city grows and grows rich, it acquires buildings that will then enter the treasury of not only Austrian but also world architecture.

And although many of Graz's sights have suffered in the era of the Napoleonic invasions, when its powerful fortresses exploded the troops of the "little corporal" and then during World War II from the most powerful bombings, the city still has something to brag about and attract curious tourists.

Its history is closely connected with the Habsburg dynasty. It was here that one of the luxurious residences of the royal family was located. And thanks to the fact that these areas are well preserved, tourists can fully judge the historical value of each stone, every meter of buildings and the bridge of the historical part of Graz.

But modernity is not inferior to history. Old City as Graz's attractions are attractive not only for museum exhibits, but also for crowded streets, lively pedestrian zones, cheerful street singers and musicians who not only earn, but also out of love for art, to simply entertain passers-by and get a charge of positive energy from them in return.

Here at every step there are cozy cafes, outdoor summer terraces, bars where you can drink a famous coffee with a wonderful fresh pastry (or something stronger). Complement the original picturesque color of the old quarters of various souvenir shops, boutiques, where sometimes you can buy very interesting things. After all, this is also Graz, attractions also! Because not every city is recognized as the cultural capital of Europe. It was this title that was given to Graz in 2003. Citizens have something to love their fatherland!

What the citizens of Graz are proud of is the festival of modern art that is held here every year and collects a whole pilgrimage of lovers of the beautiful with an avant-garde deviation. It is called "Styrian Autumn". Within the framework of the event, theater performances, art exhibitions and in general a lot of interesting things are held in the city.

Relics of the city

Arriving in Graz should definitely give a couple of days to just walk around the city, gain impressions, imbued with the atmosphere, get used to the atmosphere. And then already purposefully get acquainted with the most interesting monuments of art and culture. First of all, it is a medieval architectural complex led by Schlossberg Castle, one of the oldest buildings in the city. The time of construction is the 12th century. Thanks to the care of citizens and the city government, the antiquity monument is in very good condition and is open for tourists.

Equally fascinating are the medieval castle of Eggenberg and the Zaurau Palace, the grand Catholic Cathedral of the 15th century and the basilica of the 18th century.

The Austrian Museum, located in the open air near the city, the Central City Park, the oldest in the vicinity (it was defeated in the last quarter of the 19th century, occupies a considerable area and is famous for many unique plants), Arsenal, in the walls of which about 30 Thousands of weapons - from ancient to modern firearms, and much more, which deserves attention, can show the city to its guests. Plus, the wine cellars with which Graz became famous far outside of Austria, and the modern entertainment industry, set at the widest possible foot, make the city a tempting tidbit for tourists around the world.
