Unknown Spain: Santander - a city that was reborn from the ashes

This small town in the north of Spain, located on the coast of the Bay of Biscay, for many is an unexplored territory. Unlike popular tourist centers, Santander is considered one of the most aristocratic settlements on our planet.

Brilliant of northern Spain

The capital of the autonomous community of Cantabria is called the diamond of the northern resorts of the country. A charming city will acquaint you with an unknown Spain with a cool climate, cloudy weather and reminiscent of the Baltic landscapes. Many do not even believe that this is possible only an hour's drive from the hot Madrid.

All friendly guests are welcomed by friendly Spain. Santander is no exception, and for the hospitable locals for a long time remember all the tourists who have visited the cozy town.

City without a historical heritage

As the visitors to the capital of Cantabria say, to look here the medieval part is useless: in 1941 a terrible fire destroyed 37 streets with ancient buildings. This was a real tragedy for the Roman-based administrative center, because it was very different from other cities whose historical sights Spain is proud of.

Santander was subsequently completely rebuilt, and tourists are surprised at the lack of a main square and medieval color. But do not think that there is nothing to admire: the picturesque nature, restored and modern architectural monuments will surprise all visitors.

Former royal residence

Santander (Spain), whose sights do not have a centuries-old history, is famous for the whole world by the palace of Magdalena - the former royal residence. Alfonso III and his family often spent the summer in a cozy town, repeatedly confessing to him in love. At the beginning of the last century the mayor's office allocated land for luxury construction, and Santander became the summer capital of Spain. Adapted to the local landscapes, the project was successfully realized: the palace was erected on the peninsula of La Magdalena, from which amazing views are opened.

The decoration of the interior of the palace and the choice of furniture were under the control of the queen herself, scrupulous about details. After a couple of monarchs, all the nobility of the country rushed to the majestic Santander. The city in Spain hosted the royal suite until 1931, and after the overthrow of the monarchy, the beautiful palace became the property of the university.

A wonderful place to relax

Located on the Atlantic coast, an architectural masterpiece, considered the most beautiful object in the north of the country, will amaze everyone with its grace. The palace built in the English style is located in a fantastically beautiful park. Fresh air, age-old coniferous forests, an unusual museum dedicated to the sea, a small zoo will attract the attention of children and adults.

In the royal palace, open to all visitors, the Spaniards rush to spend the weekend on the peninsula. You can also sunbathe on the sandy beach with the provocative name Bikini, taste national dishes in the cafe, and the playground with a lot of attractions will be to the liking of the kid.

Dreaming of a memorable wedding ceremony in the royal residence, the newlyweds rent the palace of Magdalena, which will allow them to plunge into the atmosphere of aristocracy and romance.

Cathedral

You can not ignore the cathedral in the Gothic style, which dominates in religious buildings, with which the world is famous for Spain. Santander has changed a lot after the fierce fire, and it's not for nothing that the restored city is often compared to the Phoenix bird, which is reborn from the ashes.

Considered the heart of the capital of Cantabria, the cathedral was rebuilt anew for 10 years. A rigorous structure with two chapels designed by different architects, causes genuine interest and slight awe at the acquaintance.

Reminiscent of an impregnable fortress, the building has three naves separated by powerful columns. During the excavations inside the temple, the ruins of a Roman settlement were discovered. And now astounded visitors can watch the remains of thermae and defensive structures under the glass floor of the cathedral. Here, the heads of the saints buried in the Middle Ages were found. Now the remains are placed in special sarcophagi and are in the cathedral.

Palace of Festivals

An unusual palace, built 26 years ago, is located on the many kilometers embankment. A strange construction, contours resembling a dog, lying up paws, argues the whole of Spain.

Santander became world famous after the opening of the concert-theater site, which was recognized as one of the most ugly buildings in the country. Giant dimensions, problems with natural light, a small space between the seats and significantly exceeded the estimates caused confusion for all citizens.

In this article we told about a surprisingly hospitable resort with a beautiful name Santander. The city in Spain, whose attractions will be appreciated by tourists, is of great interest. Discovering the northern beauty of the country, the capital of Cantabria should be seen firsthand, to feel its unique atmosphere and positive energy.
