At different times this term was called coins: first a denomination of two kopecks, then three, then ten kopecks. The term itself comes from the Polish language and was used as the name of a monetary unit. In Ancient Rus this word was called the unit of calculation, but the original name came from the name of the female precious neck ornament. According to ancient chronicles, one hryvnia was quite expensive, because you could buy a whole planed boat for it. In the 11th century, coins appeared in Kievan Rus', which had a similar name. They were called "hryvnia", they were made of silver and heavy in weight. Such monetary units existed in Kievan Rus for a long time, not one hundred years. But in spite of the fact that since the 15th century the ruble became a monetary unit, the term "hryvnia" was still used to denote a unit of weight.
