The Internet has long ceased to be some kind of complement to our life, becoming an integral part of it. Too much everyday life and entertainment depends on the World Wide Web. But in order to enter it, you need something more than a stuck cord in the outlet.

Let's consider the basic types of connection to the Internet: features, equipment used and user feedback on a particular type. The options are not very diverse, but nevertheless everyone can choose something for their specific goals and conditions.

Cable connection

This is the most popular type of internet connection. Serving your area provider provides you with a cable into the apartment, through which the signal is sent to the house. In such cases, as a rule, only two connection options are used - through an optical cable and through a twisted pair.

Twisted pair

As for the twisted pair, then everything is simple. From the junction box in the entrance is a twisted cable (copper) and connects to your system unit or router. In this way, almost all multi-storey buildings are connected. Find out what type of connection to the Internet (cable) in this case is very simple: if you have thin wires (in comparison with fiber) and an average speed of up to 100 Mb / s, then there is a twisted pair. If the plume is thicker and the speed is higher, then this is fiber.

Optical cable

In another case, the apartment is set up "optics", which connects to a special junction box directly in the house. This type of connection to the Internet has one very serious advantage - it's a speed that can reach up to 1 Gbit / s.

Through an optical cable, you can easily get not only access to the World Wide Web, but also use telephony and television. That is, instead of three cables laid you get one.

In turn, the cable type of connection to the Internet has two options for working with network protocols - local and virtual. Let us consider them in more detail.

The local network

The essence of local protocols is that your communications provider simply assigns you a separate IP address. The provider includes all computers in one large network, where it can safely monitor each address. In addition, this type of connection to the Internet is characterized by the presence of dynamic or static IP.

The dynamic variant is the simplest, because all the network settings fall on the shoulders of the provider itself, and the user does not need to correct anything himself. How to find out the type of Internet connection in this case? If you stuck the cable in a computer or router and after a couple of seconds accessed the World Wide Web, it means that you have a dynamic IP, otherwise the operating system will request additional parameters for logging in.

The static option is more fussy in terms of access. Before each session, the system will request data for access to the Internet, which you had to provide the provider. They do not change, so it's enough to enter them once, and in the future the operating system will get access to the network itself.

This option is most convenient for online services, which constantly request from you a static IP-address. How can I find out what type of Internet connection is in this case? Most modern routers are able to determine the type of connection and inform the owner about it. If you use obsolete or frank budget equipment, you can simply call your provider and clarify all the information you are interested in. Judging by the feedback of users in numerous specialized forums, providers prefer to "put" subscribers to a static IP. As for the quality of the connection, a lot depends on the cable used (fiber / twisted pair) and your equipment (router / network card).

Virtual network

A virtual private network, or, in other words, a VPN, is an encrypted communication protocol where the exchange of all information between the user's computer and the provider is encrypted, greatly increasing the security of the network. There are basically two types of VPN connections-PPPoE and PPTP (L2TP).

One of the most popular types of virtual network is PPPoE-protocols. To connect to the Internet, you only need a login and password. The "Windows" platform will recognize this type as a high-speed connection with a conditional dialing number.

A much less popular type is PPTP (L2TP), therefore, as entering a password with a login, the user must specify the exact address of the provider's server. Another distinctive feature of the PPTP connection is the encryption method, which is fundamentally different from PPPoE. One of the most famous providers working on this protocol is "Beeline" (home Internet). The type of connection from other suppliers can also vary depending on the conditions of the area (the proximity of the tower, the required speed, etc.).

Feedback about this type of connection is very different. Some are quite satisfied with the often changing speed of the data flow (video viewing, working with textual information, etc.), and for someone it's a critical moment. The latter are, as a rule, gamers who need low ping (server response delay), that is good bandwidth. For example, if you have a connection type MTS-Internet through a VPN connection (flash modem), then in popular games of the genre MOVA League of Legends and DOTA ping will fluctuate from 90 to 120 ms. While by cable connection the response time does not exceed 40-60 ms.

Combined connection

This type includes several types of connection to the Internet. The virtual network here is the priority type of connection, and as an additional resource, dynamic or static IP addresses are used. That is, the difference between them is the manual or automatic input of data about the provider's server.

This type is considered one of the most complex and is used extremely rarely. It is often used by municipal services with a multi-level office structure: pension fund, gas services, employment centers, etc.

Phone line

Fiber-optic cable seriously dominates in front of telephone lines, but for a number of reasons (countryside, remote settlement, etc.), it is not advisable to pull an expensive Internet cable to the provider. In this case, at least somehow it helps to have a home phone, that is, an ADSL or Dial-Up connection.

ADSL-connection allows you to work on the Internet with a small speed, about a dozen megabits. For most ordinary tasks this is quite enough. For full-fledged operation in the network, you need a modem and a telephone cable. In order for both devices to function simultaneously and correctly (a computer with a network and a telephone), a splitter is needed that branches the cables to both the home telephone and the system unit.

Connection type Dial-Up is, as they say, the last century. In this case, if you work on the Internet, the telephone line will be busy. In addition, the data transfer rate is limited to 56 Kbps, which, by today's standards, is very, very small. Despite all the shortcomings of the Dial-Up connection, it is sometimes used in hard-to-reach areas.

Judging by the feedback from users, this method of connection is almost not in demand, because even watching the video on the channel "Youtube" in low resolution is the real problem. The only thing you can count on with this connection is only letters, pictures and music at a low bitrate.

Satellite Internet

One of the most expensive types of connection, but it is almost ubiquitous. A satellite dish allows you to access the World Wide Web even in the wilderness, where there is no simple communication. The only condition is the good visibility of the orbiting satellite, which is not a problem for a venerable provider.

For sure, many are familiar not by hearsay with satellite television. In the case of the Internet, the principle is the same, with the only difference being that a plate with a transmitting head is additionally installed on the plate for data transfer in both directions.

The speed of the channel is measured in tens of megabits. One of the main disadvantages of this type of connection is sky-high tariffs and expensive equipment.

Wi-Fi

With the protocols of "wi-fi" many are probably familiar. Someone at home has a router installed, and someone uses free entry points in public places. "Vai-Fay" covers, as a rule, hard-to-connect areas like cottage settlements and other private sectors. For work, the operator installs base stations that provide the network with a nearby area within a radius of five to ten kilometers.

A special receiver is required for the connection, and if you are far away from the base station, the special antenna that amplifies the signal will not interfere.
