Tonsils and tonsils - what's the difference? Adenoids, tonsils, tonsils

Every mother knows that the children's organism is often exposed to diseases, especially children often suffer from angina, which can cause many complications. Let's figure out how to treat inflamed tonsils to children and adults, whether there is a need for their removal, and what they need our body for.

Tonsils and tonsils - what's the difference?

I would like to initially clarify one point. All parents must understand the terms: tonsils and tonsils (what's the difference, and whether there is any at all, we'll learn from this material). In fact, it's the same thing. From a medical point of view, the correct name is palatine tonsils, but glands are more common for the people. Do not faint, when the doctor puts your child an unfamiliar diagnosis - tonsillitis. So that these words do not cause fear, you need to understand what they mean.

  • Tonsils - an important organ of the immune system, located in the throat, between the palatine arch, closer to the root of the tongue. There are tonsils of lymphoid tissue.
  • Tonsillitis doctors called inflammation of the tonsils. The disease can be either acute or chronic. Acute tonsillitis in a familiar life is known to parents as a sore throat.
  • In fact, the tonsils are the defenders of the whole organism. It is this organ of the immune system that is an obstacle to harmful microorganisms. The lymphoid tissue, of which the tonsils consist, is able to produce special antibodies that take part in the fight against pathogenic microbes. It turns out that the main element of the immune system in children is precisely the palatine tonsils, which protect the baby from the penetration of viruses, infections and bacteria.

Why the body needs tonsils

Clusters of lymphoid tissue located between the nasal and oral cavity are primarily needed to protect the child's body from all sorts of viruses and bacteria. When you inhale, the baby, in addition to the air, also seizes the pathogens of various infections, and the glands (photos will be presented in this article) stop and neutralize them.

In addition to the protective function, palatine tonsils participate in the regulation of hematopoiesis, forming lymphocytes (cells of the immune system) that participate in the formation of antibodies.

Causes of inflammation of the tonsils

Glands can protect our body only with a normally functioning immune system. Weakening immunity significantly reduces the ability of tonsils to delay and neutralize viruses. What happens in this case? Microbes simply settle and accumulate on the surface of the glands, as a result of which they become inflamed. In this state, they not only do not protect the body, but, on the contrary, pose a threat. The most common disease of the tonsils is tonsillitis, in acute form - angina. Each of us knows how hard this disease is borne: high fever, terrible pain in the throat. In fact, the symptoms of angina are not as terrible as the complications that appear after the illness. No expert in the field of medicine can make a complete list of possible dangers, as it is replenished every year. Inflammation of the tonsils in some cases can lead to damage to the heart, joints, kidneys and other organs. To date, doctors have identified over 100 diseases directly related to tonsillitis. The results of recent studies have shown that angina can even lead to impaired fertility. Therefore, inflammation of the tonsils - the disease is quite serious and dangerous, and even if for some reason it could not be avoided, it is necessary to start promptly and competently to start treatment.

Symptoms of inflammation of the glands

With an increase in palatine tonsils in the oropharynx, less space becomes, as a result of which breathing becomes difficult, and food progresses worse. But this is not the worst. If adenoids, tonsils (amygdala) are inflamed at the same time, then the baby's speech suffers.

Each mother can independently determine the state of clusters of lymphoid tissue in the pharynx. In case of inflammation, uneven round formations of pale pink or yellowish color will be seen from the side arms. How does the glands look normal? Without exacerbation there is no plaque and white dots filled with pus, there is no swelling and redness. When you touch the palatine tonsil, a soft consistency is noted. All these signs determine the condition of the glands.

If the tonsils have increased to such a state that they practically close together, the child will have to be translated into semi-liquid dishes. If necessary, such a diet is maintained until complete recovery.

On the one hand, tonsils and tonsils (what's the difference, we already know) protect our body from the attacks of viruses and bacteria directly "at the entrance", on the other, become a serious threat when they can not cope with the tasks. With poor immunity or with hypothermia, exacerbation begins, and the infection that accumulates in the tonsils leads to inflammation accompanied by fever and sore throat.

What are the dangerous glands?

Inflamed palatine tonsils become a hotbed of infection for the whole organism, the so-called powder keg, exploding, which will lead not only to tonsillitis, but also to a number of other inflammations (most often otitis). Since the enlarged glands are unable to perform their basic function (protective), the infection is easily passed through the Eustachian tube into the ear. In addition, chronic tonsillitis (tonsils in the inflamed condition) is often accompanied by rhinitis, sinusitis or sinusitis.

Increased glands lead to a decrease in immunity, therefore, frequent colds and the general weakness of the baby "just around the corner". The child looks tired, he does not have enough strength for long physical and emotional loads, some even begin to lag behind the school program.

Degrees of increase in tonsils

Otolaryngologists classify glands (photos of a normal and inflamed condition are presented in this material) according to the degree of their increase. It is much easier to diagnose the condition of the baby and choose the necessary treatment tactics.

So, ENT-doctors distinguish three degrees of increase in palatine tonsils:

  1. The gland occupies the third part of the space between the anterior margin of the palatine arch and the opener.
  2. The amygdala is occupied by 2/3 of the seats.
  3. The whole space is occupied by hypertrophied glands.

Problems associated with tonsils

As already mentioned earlier, the defenders of our body (glands) can become inflamed, but in addition they deliver the child's body and other troubles:

  • Some babies are born with vices in the development of tonsils, for example, the presence of an additional palatine lobule. As a rule, in such situations, special treatment is not prescribed.
  • Hyperplasia or proliferation of tonsillar tissue. Observed in childhood, if the child does not experience any discomfort, the intervention is not necessary.
  • Various injuries. Most often, a burn when swallowing a boiling liquid or chemical. Such damage to the tonsils should be treated exclusively in the hospital and as soon as possible.
  • In the tonsils can get stuck fish bones. In this case, for the extraction of a foreign body, the specialist will need help.
  • Tumors on the tonsils are extremely rare, you can get rid of them only by surgical intervention.

Treatment of tonsils

Most of all, children under the age of 3 to 10 years are exposed to inflammation of the glands . Someone has a sore throat periodically, but someone just does not have time to rest from the illness. The therapeutic tactics for each case will be individual.

With angina, the first thing you need to adhere to is bed rest. In addition, during the disease, several treatment measures are prescribed: general and local therapy, copious drinking, taking antihistamines, and immuno-strengthening therapy. It is strictly forbidden to touch purulent tonsils, even to get rid of purulent exudate.

Many mothers with angina cause the child to gargle with an antibacterial solution in the hope that this way will get rid of the plaque on the tonsils. However, the benefits of this procedure remain in doubt. In fact, the solution does not reach the surface of the glands.

Direct contact of inflamed palatine tonsils with the solution is observed during drinking. That's why patients with angina recommend several times a day to drink tea with lemon, warm milk with the addition of honey, soda and butter.

Now you should pay some attention to antibiotics. Without them, you can not cure angina (it looks like glands in the disease, you can see in the photo) will not work, moreover, the probability increases that the disease will go on into chronic form. Since bacteria quickly adapt to antibiotics, the range of medicines is being replenished every year. Therefore, it is not surprising that your pediatrician was prescribed not penicillin, but a stronger modern medication. What kind of antibiotic is suitable for your child should be decided only by a specialist, taking into account the history of allergies, atopic dermatitis or bronchial asthma.

Treatment with folk medicine

I would like to talk about the most effective methods of dealing with inflamed tonsils, which are mainly used to treat children.

  1. Decoction of chamomile, calendula, St. John's wort, kidneys of pine, violet, horsetail and string. All herbs are mixed and poured with boiling water, insist for 2-3 hours. The ready-made broth is used to rinse the throat.
  2. Well helps with sore throat honey and red pepper. On the compress paper, put the necessary ingredients, from the bottom, set fire to the wax candle and wait for the honey to melt. Then take out a pod of red pepper and take 2 tablespoons before eating.
  3. With tonsillitis, infusion with Kalanchoe is effective. It is used to rinse your throat.

We hope this article will help the young parent understand the terms such as tonsils and tonsils, and the difference between angina and tonsillitis will be clear to them too.
