Tips on how to learn how to draw portraits (not for fame or money)

Usually people who do not have a special artistic education, do not dare to depict human faces. It is understandable, for this you need to know the anatomy, the structure of the skull, the types of facial muscles and much more. Such pupils are more interested in how to learn to draw flowers, still lifes or landscapes, they seem more accessible ... However, in order to make the drawing look like a specific person, academic knowledge in the field of painting is not necessarily obligatory. Let this sketch and not become a masterpiece, but the memory of a meeting will save.

It is especially valuable to know how to learn to draw portraits, in our age of electronic digital cameras and cameras, mounted in mobile phones. All the same, a caricature or a sketch executed with its own carries much more positive energy than any shot (with whatever resolution it may be), because art revitalizes emotions, and technology does not always succeed.

Learning to draw a portrait is really not that difficult (unless the task is to create a highly artistic work).

To begin with, you need to imagine some kind of ideal person that most people would consider beautiful. So, the shape is oval. You can compare this form with the face of the person being represented and make corrections.

Now you need to determine the lines of location of the eyes, ears and the bottom of the nose. If the one who is drawn does not agree to pose, then it remains to use his photograph or his own memory. You need to imagine how low your mouth is, how high your eyes are, and, on this basis, draw horizontal lines inside the face oval.

Artists who already know how to learn how to draw portraits, recommend that all newcomers pay more attention to their eyes: the similarity that is achieved depends to a large extent on them. With all the diversity of people living on earth, they are conventionally divided into a relatively small number of types. The most common type of eyes is almond-shaped, but there are others (it is important to understand what they are for the person they portray). It should also be determined with the inclination of the outer and inner edges of the eyes.

Now the nose. It is already at the top and wider from below. The line of the bottom edge in the figure is already there, it remains only to convey the features of its shape. Beginners, just learning how to learn to draw portraits, it is better not to try to depict this facial feature too much.

The mouth is represented by three main lines. The upper edge resembles the letter "M" stretched along the sides. The bottom line is an arch bent to the bottom. Between them the mouth itself is a small meandering line. It is better not to draw teeth unfamiliar with anatomy to beginning artists.

The lines of eyebrows and hair work out, as a rule, best of all. To describe the shape of the hairstyle is a relatively simple matter.

The image of the ears also usually does not cause difficulties, unless, of course, they dwell in detail on their structure, which requires certain knowledge.

Remain the neck and clothing (or rather, the collar or neckline). This is quite simple, but such details give the entire outline a completeness.

After the end of the work, it's a good idea to take a break, and then (for example, the next day) to assess how much that has turned out successfully conveys the external resemblance and, perhaps, the character of the person drawn. Small details (such as moles, for example) can also be important.

And finally, a few tips thoughtful about how to learn how to draw portraits:

  • Pencil is better to use soft.
  • Do not be afraid to make a mistake, you can fix it with the eraser.
  • Draw what you need to see, not what you want.
  • If you have the ability, persistently continue to learn.

And further! Any criticism should be treated with angelic patience, especially if the drawing is commented on by a professional artist.
