Thurret Syndrome: Symptoms and Methods of Treatment

Thurret Syndrome is a relatively rare disease that is accompanied by the defeat of the central nervous system. It is worth noting that this is a genetic disease, the causes of which are not yet fully known.

What is Tourette's Syndrome?

This disease was first described not so long ago. The fact is that the main symptoms of the disease are ticks, not only muscular, but also vocal. Sick people often simply can not control their movements and speech. That is why for many years the signs of the disease were considered nothing more than "obsession with evil spirits".

Only in 1825 was published an article describing the condition of the seven-year-old boy. His unknown disease was accompanied by muscle ticks and speech disorders. Since then, an active study of this disease began. In 1885 Gilles de la Tourrett studied this problem, in whose honor the syndrome was named. It was he who identified the main symptoms of the disease and made some assumptions about its causes.

Unfortunately, the exact causes of the disease are not yet clear. Scientists are sure only that this is a genetic disease that is activated by malfunctions in the synthesis and metabolism of dopamine.

Tourette's disease: the main symptoms

As already mentioned, this disease is accompanied by vocal and motor tics. Muscular tics can be either simple or complex. Simple, as a rule, associated with uncontrolled reduction of one group of muscles. This can be, for example, frequent blinking, twitching of shoulders and hands, grimaces on the face, stretching of the lips into the tube, finger movements, contraction of the abdominal muscles, etc.

Complex tics can be represented, for example, by bouncing. Sometimes the patient can touch some objects that are near people or his own body. By the way, this symptom can be dangerous for health, since the patient can bite his lips to the blood or even bang his head against the wall.

As for simple vocal tics, it is basically some extra sounds - during a speech a person can whistle, mooch, cough, and so on. In more complex cases, vocal disturbances are represented by whole words or even sentences that are completely out of place during the conversation. Unfortunately, the patient is practically unable to control the tick.

Thurret Syndrome: Diagnosis and Treatment

As a rule, the disease is diagnosed at an early age - a child can not yet restrain seizures by force of will. If there is any suspicion, you should immediately contact a neurologist. The doctor should also assess the stage of the disease, analyzing the frequency and duration of ticks, the mental state, the ability to adapt to society, and the tendency to learn and assimilate information.

Thurret Syndrome is a dangerous disease. It is important to turn to a specialist in time. In the early stages of medication is not required - only regular sessions with a therapist are needed. In more severe cases, patients are prescribed medications that relieve muscle spasms and stop seizures. With prolonged absence of treatment, development of depressive conditions is observed - in this case the patient needs special help.

To date, the method of surgical treatment is being actively developed. During the operation, a special chip is placed in the patient's brain. Unfortunately, none of the experimental procedures has yet provided a lasting result.

As a rule, Turret's syndrome in the presence of proper treatment does not affect the mental development and duration of life of the patient.
