Therapeutic dentistry: problems and methods of treatment

This type of medical activity, such as therapeutic dentistry, is aimed at diagnosing, as well as treating those diseases that are associated with the periodontal tissues, the oral mucosa and the teeth directly. Its function includes the development of new therapeutic, preventive, and diagnostic techniques and the identification of any links between diseases of internal organs and diseases of the teeth.

Tasks

Therapeutic dentistry has the following tasks:

  • Identification, prevention and treatment of dental caries.
  • Restoration of teeth that are destroyed, with the help of modern materials intended for sealing.
  • The so-called endodontic treatment. This treatment of those tissues that are located in the root canals and in the cavity of the tooth.
  • Identification, prevention and treatment of dental diseases that occur without caries.
  • Treatment of diseases of the oral mucosa.
  • Identification, prevention and treatment of diseases inherent in peri-tootal tissues (parodontium refers to them).

Diagnostics in therapeutic stomatology

Therapeutic dentistry is actively engaged in diagnostics and, it is worth noting, in this activity there are different types of it. Doctors use cold and heat to determine the reactions of tissues. Using these techniques, it is possible to identify, for example, the differences between pulpitis, caries and periodontitis. By resorting to electrodontodiagnosis (abbreviated to EDI), it is possible to determine the threshold for sensitivity of the tooth and soft tissues, which subsequently helps to detect the presence or absence of their diseases.

Also, therapeutic dentistry conducts microbiological studies, thanks to which it is possible to clarify the nature of the lesion of the oral mucosa. From the focus of inflammation take the material and, investigating it, detect the causative agent of infection, as well as sensitivity to certain antibiotics.

Methods of treatment

Practical therapeutic dentistry is rich in the methods of treatment that are used in it. The dentist-therapist has a lot of such methods. For example, tooth decay at the stain stage can be cured in many ways, by which the mineral composition of the enamel is restored. One of the popular methods involves the introduction of fluoride and calcium into the tooth tissues with the help of electrophoresis and applications. To treat deep stages, doctors perform a preparation of the so-called carious cavity, followed by a filling. Dentists-therapists, using the most modern filling materials, not only seal, but also completely restore the appearance of the teeth.

Training for a dentist-therapist

Recently, this specialty is very popular. That is why the Department of Therapeutic Dentistry enjoys wide popularity. It is available today in many medical universities. And, it is worth noting, this department is one of the leading in the methodological work of universities. Graduates receive a decent education, with which they can get a really high-paying job.
