Today the world is going through a period that can be called "information glut" - the amount of incoming flow that falls on the average inhabitant of a metropolis is much greater than the bandwidth of its perception. We literally drown in the abundance of advertising, news, reviews, videos, competition results and other information "noise." In such a situation, the role of education in life becomes as invaluable - as a school and university, so optional, independent.

How the amount of "stored knowledge" in the world increased

For the primitive communal tribe, any knowledge was a jewel - suffered, collected by a multitude of mistakes and failures, it was passed from father to son, from mother to daughter, from shaman to disciple. How to make a stone tip, how best to sneak up to the mammoth, and then save his skin. The chain was interrupted - knowledge was lost.

Over time, the need to protect precious technology and recipes led to the emergence of writing - primitive icons on the stone and clay eventually turned into an alphabet. Clay tablets evolved into papyrus scrolls and hand-written books of leather. And all this time information was the greatest value - libraries were valued by emperors above silver and gold. The role of education in the modern world is not so acute - for all knowledge of the world is open to us.

The first breakthrough was Gutenberg's printed books. From the subject of the elite book began to turn into a thing prestigious, but affordable and middle class. Since then, the number of books in the world has multiplied, creating more and more "preserved knowledge". However, there was still a deficit of information - most people took it less than they could absorb.

Age of computer technology

The advent of the Internet has become a real revolution - no less, and maybe even more significant, than the printing presses. The spread and amount of information with the advent of the World Wide Web began to grow at a fantastic pace.

Over time, the average user of a personal computer, spending 3-4 hours on the network, literally "overloaded" with an endless stream of chaotic knowledge that spills over him from the computer screen.

At the same time, most of the information is frankly "garbage". A huge amount of advertising, memes, jokes and jokes do not carry anything meaningful. They literally "clog the memory" of a person, greatly reducing his thinking abilities.

An excessive amount of theory led to a decrease and deterioration of practice. If, four hundred years ago, an apprentice, who studied pottery technology from a master, not only used it "from and to," but often perfected, today most of us simply "dump from operative memory" 99% of what they perceived for the day.

That is why the role of education in the modern world should not be reduced to diligent acquisition of knowledge. Much more attention should be paid to filtration, concentration on the necessary, the formation and development of certain skills.

What are we actually taught?

I am sure that many of us, when entering the university, were horrified to realize that the knowledge received in eleven years of zealous cramming is either simply not needed, or safely forgotten when passing the final exams. How often you can hear from the teachers of the institute or academy - "forget everything that you were taught in school." Allow - so what were these long years at the desk?

It's even more amazing when we hear again when we go to work - forget everything that you were taught at the university. It turns out, one and a half dozen years just need to "throw in the dump"? Then why do you need such an education?

Why is this happening?

The fact is that the modern educational system is not corny at the pace of the development of society. The new program has not yet reached the pages of the textbooks, but is already outdated. Today, many scientists and educators begin to say that the role of education in the modern world is to capture the processes occurring in the world and to "arm" people with the optimal set of skills that enable them to successfully achieve their goals.

If a hundred years ago the education system was a locomotive that develops human thought, now it turns into a brake that limits it.

What needs to be changed

What are the points of attention of scientists of the whole world now?

  1. "Heaviness." It means the duration of the processes of creating special programs, through which pupils and students are taught. Development, run-in, testing, release - this is many times longer than necessary. The development of education in the modern world is based precisely on such protracted, overly elaborated processes.
  2. The power of "academic" subjects. Mathematics, physics, language and literature - these disciplines account for the lion's share of school time in school. Of course, they are needed, but is it possible to such an extent? Remember how often most of us need algebra or higher mathematics? In order to count the change in the store, enough arithmetic second class. But girls in eighteen elementary can not prepare a dinner, and boys - to hammer a nail or to pump down the drooping automobile wheel.
  3. The emphasis is on lecturing, "a priori" submission of information. This factor is more pronounced in the school, where in the overwhelming majority of subjects the alternative point of view is considered heretical and is punished with bad marks. It seems that the role of education in the modern world is to "sharpen" the individual under one average standard.
  4. The predominance of theory over practice. This ratio is very disharmonious. Anyone who has tried to master, for example, a ten-finger blindprint using a computer, will see that for fifteen minutes of studying the program, there are many hours of practical exercises. At the desk, however, the opposite is true - the teaching of theoretical material is many times greater than mastering practical skills.

As we see, science and education in the modern world are far from optimal. What subjects could be introduced, for example, in general schools?

Car service

Today almost every family has a car, or even one. At the same time, everyone has to study for several months (most often combining it with work) and pass on to the rights, spending on it forces, nerves and time. In the senior classes of the school it would be quite possible to teach both the theory and the practice of driving. For two years (10 and 11 classes), schoolchildren would have mastered all the necessary knowledge base, and managed to roll for 300-500 hours. This would lead to a significant reduction in the number of accidents and improve the overall situation on the roads. Unfortunately, the education system in the modern world prefers to teach logarithms and extraction of roots, which can be useful, at best, to one in ten graduates.

The current repair, knowledge of regulatory and legal acts - all this would also have a place in the clock grid.

Legal Literacy

In the intricacies of our laws, professional lawyers do not always understand, but for a man in the street it is generally a dark forest. To teach the rights and duties of a citizen in different life situations, the ability to work with the relevant documents and government structures would be worthwhile, starting from grade 7-8. Imagine how the importance of education in the modern world will grow, if such objects begin to appear in ordinary schools.

Financial "personal management"

The vast majority of us do not know how to wisely manage their money - from household spending and ending with lending in banks. It is unlikely that this is seriously troubling the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, but how many people lead to mistakes in the "debt pits", business failures, problems with the family budget. Of course, you need to learn from your mistakes, but you can do without them completely.

Beginning to teach the treatment of money can be from the elementary school, instilling in children a reasonable and serious attitude to material values. Alas, the problems of education in the modern world are very serious, and it is unlikely that such a subject will appear in the near future in general schools.

Time management, or "time management"

Think about how effectively you use time during the day. Thinking? If you sit for five minutes with a pen and paper and remember everything you did during the day, you will see that with a minimum planning of tasks for the day, you would do half more useful things.

Children are clean sheets. Regular training, starting from grade 3-4, would create a concrete habit for final exams to plan and calculate their actions, record telephones and contact details, save and use their precious time competently. The RF Ministry of Education and Science is unlikely to introduce such a revolutionary subject into the school curriculum in the near future, and it is worthwhile counting on higher education institutions, especially with financial and economic bias.

Household skills of men and women

In Soviet times there was a good subject called "work". It taught us how to work with a jig saw, burn out a tree, sharpen details on a milling machine, and make stools. Girls were offered cutting, embroidery, knitting and sometimes the basics of cooking. Some of this could be applied in life, something is not there, but on the whole there was a sound grain.

In today's school, work has evolved into a discipline called "technology." This subject has even less practical significance for students - since the world has changed greatly since the times of "labor", and the program has changed insignificantly - and this is an indicator that the education system in the modern world is constantly lagging behind. Looks, pondering, analyzing, painfully "giving birth" and constantly does not keep up with the world.

What would it be worth while to teach in technology lessons? How to fix the outlet and screw the chandelier, how to assemble the cabinet and drill the wall. Use a stove and a steamer, a washing machine and a dishwasher - this knowledge would be of great help to young people coming out of the school gate.

Summing up

Science and education in the modern world are not very similar to each other. Science is the tip of human thought, directed from the past into the unknown, these are brilliant insights and amazing discoveries. Education in its main segment is an echo of an echo that has passed through many filters, refined knowledge, often obsolete or simply unnecessary.

The role of education in society is extremely high. This is good or bad work, it's an interesting or boring life, it's sad everyday life or flashing adventures. A person can study all his life, and can stop in development already at the school desk.

What do we see now, today? The twenty-first century offers humanity the most serious challenges in its entire history. In order for us to overcome them with honor, science and education in the modern world should be synchronous, creating a real "new man".
