The norm of leukocytes in peripheral blood - which indicators should be oriented

It's no secret that today almost every patient who has to take laboratory tests is trying to learn and interpret their results independently, and not to seek qualified advice from a specialist doctor. Almost every form of research indicates acceptable limits of deviations, including the norm of leukocytes, but ordinary people often forget that any result of the analysis should be evaluated only in the complex of all investigated parameters.

Clinical blood test - how to get an informative result

It is worth noting that the results of laboratory studies directly depend not only on the state of health, but also on the age of patients. So, the norm of leukocytes in newborns, at different periods of childhood, during puberty differs significantly. That is why the interpretation of the clinical blood test data should only be a qualified specialist doctor who pays attention to all the attendant factors in the complex. It must be remembered that the norm of leukocytes in the blood of women in many respects depends on the state of the hormonal background of the organism and changes in connection with the phases of the menstrual cycle. Such features remain practically in all patients in the period of active menstrual function and are gradually leveled during menopause.

In addition, an experienced physician pays attention not only to the "leukocyte norm" index, but also necessarily evaluates the absolute values of each type of white blood cells - lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils, basophils and eosinophils, into the so-called leukocyte formula. This indicator describes the relative amount of each type of white blood cells to their total number, which is expressed as a percentage. And even if the total number of these shaped elements does not come out of the normal interval (in the analysis, white blood cells are found in the norm), but their formula changes, the patient must necessarily be sent for a repeat clinical analysis of the blood and additional consultations of physicians of the profile specialties, most often - therapists and hematologists.

The reasons for the change in the number of leukocytes

In modern conditions for adult patients the norm of leukocytes fits into the interval 4-9 * 10 (9) / l, but this index can vary very quickly depending on the state of the patient's body. In general, leukocytes are the fastest reproducing and maturing cells of human blood - the bone marrow, in which the cycle of formation of these elements occurs under normal conditions, most responsive to changes in the external environment and internal conditions of human life.

If the norm of leukocytes is not reached in the analysis, doctors talk about leukopenia, the most frequent causes of which are viral infections, the effect of certain toxic substances and radiation. Excess of the normal number of white blood cells is called leukocytosis, which can be caused by bacterial infections, protozoa and helminth invasions, and excessive physical exertion. That is why when a deviation in the results of a clinical blood test is detected, the doctor carefully examines the patient and tries to find out whether there are factors that can provoke changes and appoint a complex examination of the body to determine the true causes of leukocytosis and leukopenia.

Is it possible to influence the results of a clinical blood test

Often patients ask the doctor a question - whether it is possible to achieve normal leukocyte counts and clinical blood analysis only by diet correction, by changing the exercise regime or taking medications. In this case, it must be remembered that the results obtained in the laboratory study reflect the state of the organism as a whole, therefore, in the vast majority of cases, complex treatment is required that affects both the cause of the disease and its manifestations.
