The monument to Pushkin in Moscow as a tribute to the great talent

Moscow is the largest metropolis, which is the capital of the Russian Federation. There are many places in this city that have historical and cultural significance. One of them is a sculptural monument to the world-famous Russian poet Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin.

June 6, 1880 in tsarist Russia there was a unique event for that time: a monument to Pushkin in Moscow was opened. The uniqueness of this event was that at that time in Russia monuments were erected only to statesmen. The idea of creating the monument arose after the death of the great poet. A well-known poet, translator, critic and friend of Alexander Pushkin, Vasily Andreevich Zhukovsky, invited the Russian Tsar Nikolai the First to establish a pedestal to the Russian literary genius in Mikhailovsky. But this wish remained unanswered.

Over the following years, the Russian intelligentsia, various political figures of the state raised the question of perpetuating the memory of the Russian genius, but all their efforts by the Russian tsar and the government remained unnoticed. A new impetus to this idea was given in 1860 by Lyceum students of Pushkin and subsequent editions. They prepared an appeal to the government and the king himself, and thus they could achieve the result. The government of Tsarist Russia, given the numerous appeals and public opinion, gave permission to the monument to Pushkin in Moscow, but did not allocate any funds. Lyceum students were able to collect only 13,000 rubles, which is extremely small for the creation of the monument.

A new round in the creation of the monument to A.S. Pushkin began in 1870, when Yakov Karlovich Groth announced a new campaign to raise funds for the pedestal. Over the next decade, this fund was replenished with cash, and by 1880 they already accumulated 160,575 rubles 10 kopecks, thanks to which the monument to Pushkin in Moscow began to be erected.

The competition for the creation of the monument was won by the young sculptor Alexander Mikhailovich Opekushin. More than five years he worked on the monument, while creating thirty sketches of the sculpture of the Russian poet in different versions.

After much thought, he opted for a variant depicting Pushkin contemplating another poetic masterpiece. After deciding on the choice and creating a full-scale monument from gypsum, he gave his work to the bronze casting plant in St. Petersburg, on which a monument to Pushkin in Moscow was poured from bronze.

This sculpture looks very natural. If you make a description of the monument to Pushkin in Moscow, you can admire the successful choice of the size of the monument, which was found by the sculptor. The pedestal of the monument is impressively executed. Magnificent granite pedestals and four antique cast-iron lamps perfectly complement the chic architectural ensemble of sculpture.

The Pushkin monument in Moscow is located on the square, which bears the name of the famous Russian poet. Thus, the Russian people paid tribute to the great literary genius.
