The Grundtvig church is a religious landmark of Copenhagen

In the capital of Denmark, there are many unique buildings of interest to tourists. One of them is the Lutheran church, built in honor of the clergyman and philosopher Nikolai Grundtvig and named after him. Grandiose church Grundtvig is located in one of the sparsely populated areas of the city. Regularly it is visited by pilgrims from all over the world.

Nikolai Grundtvig - the famous Danish theologian

An outstanding educator, philosopher and public figure Nikolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig played a major role in the history of Denmark. He was born in 1783, graduated from the university in Copenhagen, devoted his life to enlightenment work. With his assistance in Denmark, the People's Universities were opened. Thanks to these institutions, the poorest segment of the population has the opportunity to get an education.

Nikolay Grundtvig was engaged not only in educational work. He wrote books and scientific treatises, created more than one and a half thousand church hymns, as well as religious sermons. Many hymns still sing in the Lutheran churches of Denmark. The theologian Grundtvig was a member of the country's Parliament for about 10 years, and in 1861 he was awarded the title of Honorary Bishop of the Lutheran Church of Denmark.

History of church construction

To pay homage to the well-known person, the grateful people of Denmark decided to erect a monument and build the church of Grundtvig in his honor. In 1913, the country held a competition for the best temple project. The winner was the architect Peder Wilhelm Jensen Clint. His project was different from the religious buildings being built in those years. Funds for construction was not enough, but the temple project was very popular with the people of Denmark, and then the country was declared collecting money among the population.

For the construction of the temple was chosen unpopular among the population of the area Bispebierg on the outskirts of Copenhagen. To attract residents, it was decided to build next to the cathedral inexpensive comfortable homes for workers. So the city authorities tried to form a new residential area, centered on the church Grundtvig. In September 1921, the builders laid the foundation stone for the future cathedral. For the construction of the church and residential buildings, a yellow brick, popular in Denmark, was used. Residential buildings and the building of the temple formed a single architectural ensemble.

The Grundtvig church in Copenhagen was built in 5 years. In 1926, the central part of the temple complex was erected, and in 1927 the first divine service was held. Despite the fact that the church began to function, internal work was not completed. In 1930, Jensen Clint died, and then the decoration of the building took up his son Kaare. Only in 1940 internal work was completed.

The Grundtvig Cathedral - a synthesis of architectural styles

The church Grundtvig is a temple in the style of expressionism, although in its decoration elements of classical Gothic can be traced. In general, it is similar to the medieval rural buildings in the Scandinavian version.

The height of the majestic western facade, together with the bell tower, reaches 49 meters, strict, laconic forms resemble a church organ. The length of the temple, along with the porch and choir is 76 meters, and the width is 35 meters. At the same time, 1440 people can be inside.

The construction of the church was spent 6 million bricks, some of them were carefully polished and used to finish the outer walls. Sunlight reflects from them and gives the building a special splendor. The high nave is adorned by stepped, ascending 22-meter pediments.

The interior of the temple

Inside the church Grundtvig is as beautiful as outside. For finishing was used yellow Danish brick handmade, which is densely packed. All interior decoration is sustained in a strict Gothic style. The decoration is only high columns and lancet arches.

The room is divided into three parts. In the center is the main part - the "body" of the temple. Here is a pulpit built of the same brick as the whole building. Her design was developed by the son of Jensen Clint. In the nave there are chairs made of natural beech for parishioners. The project also provided seats in the side galleries, but they are currently closed for visits.

Kaare Clint designed the altar and two tin candlesticks. In his work he used his father's sketches. There is also a crucifix made by the architect's daughter. The font is carved from a calcareous rock. It consists of 8 bowls, decorated with brass. On each of them there are biblical quotations.

The church Grundtvig (Denmark) is famous for its organs. A small organ was built in 1940, and a large one was installed in 25 years. It is the longest organ on the Scandinavian Peninsula. He has 4 registers and 55 votes, the length of the pipes is 11 meters. The outline of a large organ repeats the facade of the building. Periodically, the church hosts organ concerts.
