In the pharmacy, the drug "Biltricid" can be purchased in the form of oblong, biconvex tablets of white color, sometimes with a slight yellowish or orange tinge. Tablets are placed in dark glass bottles of 6 pieces each. The main active component of the drug is praziquantel - each tablet contains about 600 mg of this substance. As for the auxiliary components, the drug contains magnesium stearate, macrogol 4000, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium lauryl sulfate, hypromellose, corn starch, titanium dioxide and povidone.

How does the drug work? Basic properties

The main active substance of the drug has anthelmintic properties. In particular, it affects the membranes of helminth cells, increasing its permeability for calcium ions. This effect leads to a generalized contraction of the smooth musculature of the parasite. In addition, there is a decrease in glycogen levels, inhibition of glucose uptake by parasite cells, and an increase in the amount of lactic acid released. The result of such an impact is the death of parasites, in particular cestodes and trematodes.

Indications for admission

This drug is indicated for the treatment of helminthic diseases, such as, for example, opisthorchiasis. Treatment with "Biltricidum" helps in the infection of the human body with various types of schistosomes. Indications for therapy are diseases caused by hepatic and pulmonary flukes, as well as some other types of helminths.

The drug "Biltricid": instructions for use

Do not use the medicine on your own. Only a doctor after careful diagnosis can prescribe treatment with the drug "Biltricid". The instructions for use contain only general recommendations.

The dosage directly depends on the condition of the patient and the variety of the parasite. For example, with opisthorchiasis, doctors usually prescribe 25 mg of active ingredient per kilogram of weight three times a day. Duration of treatment is 1-3 days. The dose of infection with schistosomes is 40 mg / kg once a day, with a one-day treatment.

The tablet should be swallowed, not liquid, squeezed with a small amount of water. It is recommended to take the drug before or during meals. If the medicine should be drunk once a day, then it is best to do it in the evening.

To many patients with helminthiasis, doctors prescribe the drug "Biltricid". Analogues of it, by the way, are more toxic. Despite the fact that the drug acts on the body sparingly, there are some limitations. In particular, it is not prescribed for children under four years old, as well as for women in the first trimester of pregnancy. Contraindications include cysticercosis of the eye, allergy to the components of the drug. Therapy can not be combined with taking rifampicin. The medicine is used with caution in the presence of violations of the heart rhythm, decompensated form of hepatic insufficiency, hepatolienne schistosomiasis.

As for the side effects, they are rarely recorded. Nevertheless, some patients sometimes complain of abdominal pain, the appearance of diarrhea (possibly the presence of blood impurities), nausea and vomiting, a decrease in appetite.
