The default gateway is not available (Windows 10): Troubleshooting

Quite often, many users working on the World Wide Web are faced with an unpleasant problem of communication failure, when the system gives a message about a connection without Internet access, or, even worse, a warning that the default gateway is unavailable. Windows 10 when considering the problem and how to fix it will be taken as a basic example, although in versions 7 and 8 the problem is similar.

What is a gateway?

Before considering the problem of connection, it is necessary to dwell a little on the theory and explain what a gateway is.

Without going into the jungle of computer terminology and technology of functioning, we note that in Windows operating systems the gateway is special software (software) in the form of a router that allows you to convert (convert) the protocols of network connections among themselves. In fact, a network gateway can be called a router, but it sends, transmits and receives data packets only on networks with the same protocols.

The software gateway in Windows does not depend on this and is able to work with connections using different protocols. In fact, it is a means of exchanging data between computers, servers and entire networks, regardless of the way they are used to connect to the Internet or to join one network.

What does it mean "The default gateway is not available"?

In principle, if such a problem arises, it only indicates that the current settings do not allow the above processes to be performed. The gateway error most often appears in case of using built-in or external network Wi-Fi-adapters, and in Windows operating systems, starting with the seventh version and higher. As already clear, the "dozen" is no exception.

On the other hand, the approximate situation may look like this: the mobile phone or tablet connects to the home network without problems, the pages load, the downloads are activated, etc., and the laptop for some reason with enviable persistence issues a message that the gateway installed By default, is not available (Windows 10 in this case).

Problems here can be quite a lot. The main reasons are the "fledged" power settings, the Internet connection itself, or the incorrectly installed (or unofficial, albeit working) drivers of the network adapter. In general, somewhere there is something wrong. Because of this, the reception and transmission of data packets is not possible, that is, the channel is simply blocked or inaccessible.

Very often, the lock can be observed when working with Torrent clients, when the rate of reverse distribution is set higher than the download speed.

"The default gateway is not available": what should I do?

Now issues related to the penetration of the virus into the system will not be considered, since such situations are extremely rare. Let us dwell on some of the most well-known causes and methods for their elimination.

The fact is that the default Windows settings are such that sometimes they can cause problems. However, do not panic. The transformation of the parameters responsible for the connection is simple enough. Let's dwell on each type of settings in more detail.

Adjust the power settings

So, the user sees a warning on the screen that the default gateway is not available. Windows 10 allows you to make settings for the desired configuration quite simply. And any, even completely unprepared user can perform such actions.

To do this, you can use either the command line, or the standard "Control Panel" in Windows 10, or administration (no special difference). First of all, you should pay attention to the power supply, the power-saving parameters of which are very frequent and cause such malfunctions.

So, first use the "Control Panel" in Windows 10 and select the device manager section there (it can also be called from the "Run" menu (Win + R), where the command devmgmt.msc is prescribed). Here we find our network adapter and select the property line in the context menu . On the power management tab, remove the "bird" from the parameter that allows the device to turn off to save power. The same settings can be made in the computer administration section.

If this does not work, and the "Default Gateway is not available" error appears again, Windows 10 offers similar settings on the system itself (the power section in the Control Panel). Here, the wireless adapter is also selected, and the set value must match the maximum performance.

Changing TCP / IP settings

However, as practice shows, mostly failures of this type are associated with the wrong configuration of the TCP / IP protocol, in particular, when the settings for obtaining the IP address of the subnet mask, gateway, DNS or proxy server are set not in automatic but in manual mode .

We go to the Internet properties section, select the line with the appropriate protocol (IPv4) and use the property button. In the gateway parameters line, look at the specified values. Very important! Here, the gateway address specified on the router (router) must be registered. There may be two options: 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 (for example, when distributing Wi-Fi from a laptop). On the label located on the back of the router, there is a correct value. We enter the correct address - that's all. It can often be observed that the IP address and gateway values may be the same, but this applies to single terminals, rather than several network.

Installing the official drivers

A fairly common phenomenon is that the error "The default gateway is not available" for Windows 10 is due to improperly installed or unofficial Wi-Fi adapter drivers. What to do in this case?

In the "Device Manager", first remove the installed drivers or the device from the context menu with the entry to the properties section (or without it). Now you will need to download the latest version of the official driver from the site of the manufacturer of the equipment from the other computer, and when installing it again, tell the system to install from the selected location. In many cases, the problem is solved in this way.

Other possible situations

Of course, these are only the most common cases. Sometimes the problem can be, say, in the inoperability of the adapter itself or the network card. There's nothing to be done, you'll have to test the equipment, and replace it if necessary.

Rarely, but still you can see problems with the included virus software or a firewall, not fully installed by the updates of the "operating system" itself, by using the parameters Task Offload, Flow Control, etc. But in this case they were not considered, since the percentage of their occurrence is scanty .

Conclusion

It remains to add that the error that is generated does not represent anything particularly serious and is easily eliminated. Another thing is that if all of the above does not help, the problem should be looked for deeper (most likely, you will have to change the corresponding equipment). But as for the standard ways of fixing, they work almost always.
