Suspended ceilings with their own hands: the main types and characteristics

Most people get lost when they have to choose the option of finishing the room, especially if they are going to make hanging ceilings with their own hands. This is not surprising, considering all the variety of offers of suspended structures that are present on the market. But each solution has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it is worth considering them in more detail.

To date, one of the most popular materials that are used in the decoration of ceilings, there are slabs of plasterboard, which consist of a modified gypsum, bound on both sides by cardboard. Mounted this material on a special frame of metal or wood. The composition of such plates can be different.

If silicones are added during the production of drywall, waterproof boards are obtained, if glass fiber is added, the material will be refractory. There are also flexible sheets that are used for decorative finishing of the finished structure. In this case, figured hanging ceilings from plasterboard are obtained , photos of which can be seen in any editions on construction and design.

In addition to gypsum boards, other models are widely used, which represent a suspension system with special modules - slabs, slats or cassettes. The composition of tiled ceilings includes mineral fiber and gypsum base. Usually their size is not more than 60x60 cm. The cassette modules are somewhat similar to the plates, but they are made of metal. But the lath ceilings are a design that consists of load-bearing profiles, hangers and metal panels that are made of aluminum. Making such hanging ceilings with your own hands is also not particularly difficult.

It is worth to learn more about the advantages and disadvantages of all the above systems. All of them are sufficiently ecological, have sufficient fire resistance and provide good sound insulation in the room. But in case of flooding from above none of the systems will not protect you. Especially it concerns the drywall ceiling, which will have to be completely replaced.

Therefore, in the bathroom or in the kitchen it is better to install tiled suspension systems, which include mineral fibers and silicone, or give preference to metal cassettes or plates. They will reliably protect your room from the flood. In addition, tile ceilings are more practical, and in the event of damage, one or more slabs can be replaced, not the entire ceiling.

In terms of aesthetics, all suspended systems ensure a sufficiently even surface of the ceiling. Drywall, for example, allows you to realize almost any design ideas - create a ceiling of arbitrary shape - stepped, bent, broken, etc. And tile, rack and cassette systems give the opportunity to decorate the ceiling with various patterns and conduct experiments with different colors and shades.

In addition, any suspended structure is perfect for "masking" all communication devices - cables, water pipes or sewer pipes and ventilation boxes. But keep in mind that if you intend to make hanging ceilings with your own hands from plasterboard, then access to the hidden objects may become a little more complicated. Especially if the design has a large area. Therefore, if you plan to provide unimpeded access to utilities, it is better to give preference to modular suspension systems that are easily dismantled and assembled.

Concerning the cost, the gypsum plasterboard ceiling has been the most economical option on the market for more than one year. This is if you take conventional single-level blocks. And if you plan to install hinged ceilings with your own hands, while realizing bold design intentions, special gypsum plasterboard modules will cost even more than rack-mount pendant structures.

From all of the above, we can conclude that gypsum plaster ceilings are more attractive not only for appearance, but also for their low price. It is recommended to use them in small offices and other rooms with normal humidity. Modular systems are more expensive than drywall, but not worse in terms of decorative ceiling decoration. Suitable best for large areas (shopping malls, for example), but you can use them for ordinary rooms in the house.

Now you know how to make a false ceiling with your own hands.
