Russian historian Natalya Basovskaya: biography, books

Basovskaya Natalia Ivanovna is a name that evokes delight and respect from someone who listened to at least one of her lectures. But one is not usually limited. I want to find out more and more about what can be so interesting to tell Natalia Basovskaya. They call her a joke, and maybe even seriously, Scheherazade. This is how the editor-in-chief of the radio station Ekho Moskvy, A. Venediktov, comments on her for her endless "tales".

Some biographical information

A month before the start of the Great Patriotic War, on May 21, 1941, the daughter of Natalia was born to a family of Russian-russified Polish noblemen (by her mother). Father, Kurenkov Ivan Fedorovich, went to the front, and how her mother survived, having an infant child in her arms, one can only guess. However, Maria Adamovna's health was iron. Despite all the hardships, she lived a hundred and two years (1909-2011) and had time to rejoice at her daughter's successes and to understand her granddaughter Eugenia, who was born in 1964 in the first marriage of her daughter and later became a philologist.

Studies at school and at Moscow University

In the years 1952-1960. In Moscow schools worked brilliant history of the Middle Ages brilliant teacher Ada Svanidze, who later will teach at Moscow State University and the Russian State University for the Humanities. It was her student, who, like a sponge, absorbed knowledge, was Natalia Basovskaya. After school she entered the History Department of Moscow State University, which she graduated with honors. Natalia Basovskaya continued her studies in postgraduate studies and defended her thesis in 1969 on the subject of English politics in Gascony in the 13th and 15th centuries. This work so captured the young historian that she studied Latin (she knew English perfectly) and read all the documentation without an interpreter herself. Natalia Basovskaya turned the mountains of economic documents, and as a result, the thesis included new information. It was she who learned how the English, which at that time belonged to Gascony, profited from the export and import of wines. They twice imposed a tax on the same barrel of wine - for export and import - and they cut coupons in this way.

Teaching Activities

Since 1971, Natalia Basovskaya taught at the Department of General History of the Historical Archival Institute. But the young teacher was already collecting materials for her doctoral dissertation. In parallel, she organized a circle at which students conducted dramatized trials of famous historical figures.

At the same time, Natalia Ivanovna managed to broadcast a radio program about people who, in school textbooks on history, for the fifth to seventh grade, were given only one, two or more lines. The program was called Radio for the History Lesson. And now there were lectures about Francis Bacon, about Lao Tzu, about Tamerlane, Richelieu and other historical personalities. Portraits were obtained against the background of history.

Defense of the thesis

Such a rich life, and besides, family and friends required time, which was not enough for a thesis. Nevertheless, in 1988, the Doctor of Historical Sciences appeared before us.

Natalia Ivanovna devoted it to the Anglo-French contradictions of the 12th-15th centuries. At this time was the Hundred Years War. On the historical stage, there were little-known Russian listeners and readers of the most interesting personalities from both the British and the French side. It was at this time that the scattered people living in the territory of present-day France and England began to feel their unity. But the contradictions between them were so great that one of the French historians of those years seriously wrote that they say that the British are not people at all: they have tails under their clothes, like those that are found in monkeys. The one-hundred-year war ended in a fracture, which was committed by a small girl from Domremi, Joan of Arc. But its final completion is 1453, although the peace treaty was never concluded.

The historical program of N. Basovskaya and A. Venediktov

Initially, on the radio "Echo of Moscow" two enthusiasts created the program "Everything is wrong". In it Natalia Ivanovna acquainted listeners with fascinating biographies of people whom she deeply studied when she was engaged in serious works on history: the historiography of problems of transition from antiquity to the Middle Ages or problems of the Hundred Years War in modern historiography.

It is easy and intelligible, however, filling her stories with historical facts, she told about the people of the Ancient World and the Middle Ages. Why did the eighteen-year-old Alexander the Great need the whole world? Why beauty Alienoru Aquitanskaya is considered the grandmother of Europe of the Middle Ages? Then, in 2006, the program changed its name, and it began to sound "All right". But the questions she answered remained interesting. Does the real king Henry V look like Shakespeare's character? Richard the Lionheart and Cicero, Leonardo da Vinci and Robin Hood have been attracting attention for centuries, and we can recreate their human image bit by bit. But Natalia Ivanovna paints them visually and brightly, people of flesh and blood with their passions and mistakes.

TV channel "Culture"

A significant event was the lectures of Natalia Basovskaya on television. The whole country could see this sorceress of the word with her own eyes. It is not only interesting material that Natalia Ivanovna describes, but also how she does it. She enters the audience and gladly greets young people: she likes young people who are interested in history. And the screens stopped people of all ages. Natalia Ivanovna is always fit, elegantly dressed. She loves and often changes her ornaments. What will we learn? About how it was born in smoke, blood and fire Middle Ages, how the great Rome perished and what a tragedy for its inhabitants. For them, the end of the world came in the literal sense of the word. After Rome, the Latins called the eternal city, without a second doubting that their foundations for ages, if not for millennia. Virgil, who created his poetic monument, was sure that Rome would always stand, while the virgin ascends to the Capitol Hill and supports the Eternal Flame on it . At the same time Natalia Ivanovna quotes this poem in Latin, and then translates each line.

And it is wonderful that we see energetic gesticulations of the lecturer, which emphasizes the significance of this or that phrase. From these lectures we learn about the life of Joan of Arc, about which Natalia Ivanovna speaks with heartfelt admiration. One should only regret that the "Culture" TV channel has stopped its broadcasts with the "Academy" program and it is possible to listen to lectures only from its archive, and new issues do not come out.

Literary Activity

On the basis of lectures that not everyone could hear, Natalia Basovskaya wrote articles. Books, in which they turned, do not lie on the shelves. These are such publications as "The Hundred Years War: The Leopard Against the Lily", as well as the series "History in Stories" and "The Man in the Mirror of History" and others.

There have already been a lot of them, and every reader expects the release with impatience, as he learns a lot about what he heard, but somehow forgot. Their heroes are Queen Victoria, Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Torquemada with his unrequited love, Marie Antoinette, Thomas More and many other historical figures.

Professor N. I. Basovskaya opened the world of history for listeners and readers from a completely different, unusual side. For this she is grateful to the huge audience of her admirers.
