Red Californian worms - irreplaceable helpers in agriculture

Earthworms are one of the most useful creatures on Earth. In 1959, in the United States, in the state of California, scientists-breeders managed to bring a new species. Thus appeared California worms. Thanks to the new features of this type of worm, it became easier to plant and improve depleted soils.

So what are the distinguishing features of Californian earthworms?

First, a new species is a long-liver. These protozoan invertebrates live on average up to 15 years. And this is 4 times more than ordinary rain "savages".

Secondly, during the season they multiply rapidly in the natural environment, postponing up to 20 cocoons. In hothouse conditions, reproduction occurs at an even faster rate.

But the main advantage - the ability to breed them even in ordinary apartments, as Californian worms are quite calm and do not crawl out of their boxes for breeding.

Value for nature and agriculture

It is difficult to find the same necessary and indispensable assistant in agriculture and agriculture, like a red Californian worm. They eat a lot of animals, birds and fish. For the first time they began to breed in large numbers in America. Thanks to this, it became possible to switch to natural, safer ways of improving the soil. However, in the process of artificial cultivation, there were some difficulties associated with the diet of worms.

As it turned out, this species can only eat the food that he was used to initially. That's why it is recommended to take cocoons for breeding. Only this approach will save the risk of losing an entire population of adults. This is due, first of all, to the fact that California worms are unable to absorb new food, since birth they are "programmed" for a certain diet.

What do Californian worms eat?

Like any other subspecies, California feeds on plant remains. For mass breeding, they build worms, where the nutrient substrate is placed. The main food is humus or manure. Fresh manure needs fermentation, that is, it must be overturned. In addition, you need to ensure that the substrate is always moistened, for this, it is covered with polyethylene. California worms in a short time completely recycle organic waste in manure, leaving behind the so-called "piles". In fact, this coprolite is a valuable fertilizer containing a lot of nutritious and easily digestible substances. The humus, in which worms live, has no smell, so it is possible and home dilution.

In conditions of breeding in an apartment, it is necessary to take into account the temperature regime. The warmer, the more active will be the process of reproduction. As food to the main substrate, you can add crushed potato peelings, fruit remnants, banana peel, spilled coffee and tea. At the same time, one should not forget about the moistening of the substrate. In the end, you can get a valuable fertilizer, and multiply the number of worms on your site several times. Due to their physiological characteristics, these invertebrates excrete a substance that neutralizes unpleasant odors, which means that breeding a house is perfectly permissible.
