Population of Syktyvkar: number, features and employment

Located in the north-west of the Russian Federation, the picturesque city of Syktyvkar lives and thrives. Characterize it can be different: a calm and measured town, and a modern metropolitan center. No matter how this settlement was perceived by somebody, one can clearly note only its good-natured and hospitable population. Syktyvkar and its inhabitants leave only the most pleasant impressions, therefore here it would be desirable to come back again and again.

History of the formation of the capital of the Komi Republic

The capital of the Komi Republic, which is part of Russia, can not be called a young city. Officially, his story began more than four centuries ago. Ust-Sysol included several dwellings of simple peasant families and a small population. Syktyvkar of those years in its modest territory owned only one attraction: a wooden building that served as a local church.

Formation of a shopping center on the river Sysola

Slow pace, but firm and confident steps in the beginning of the XVII century, the rapid growth of handicraft production, the establishment of the agricultural sector, and certain industrial spheres began. Naturally, the flourishing of production entailed the development of trade relations, and the population of Syktyvkar (then still Ust-Sysol) increased. In addition, the village had a rather favorable geographical position. All the way to the largest shopping centers of that period crossed here. Through the village it was possible to get to Veliky Ustyug, Vologda, Arkhangelsk. At the beginning of the XVIII century the population of the city of Syktyvkar numbered almost 1000 people.

The enlarged city after several decades began to be called Ust-Sysolsky, having existed with this name until 1930. After that, the decision to rename the city was taken by the population. "Syktyvkar" in translation from the language of the indigenous inhabitants of Komi means "the city on the Sysola River".

Weather and climate conditions of Syktyvkar

Not so long ago, according to local old-timers, the climatic conditions in the capital of the republic could not be called sparing. Severe long winters, occupying the main part of the calendar year, a windy, damp and cold autumn-spring period, a short, imperceptible summer, did not have the heat-loving inhabitants moving here. Climatic roughness has always smoothed out the friendly hospitable local population. Syktyvkar is often called a "smiling city", as its residents always smile to passers-by and greet visitors cordially regardless of the weather conditions.

However, the problem over which scientists around the world are racking their brains, namely, global warming, has not passed by the side and past the given terrain. If earlier 40-degree frosts were the norm almost throughout the whole winter, now they are very rare. In addition, if a cold snap occurs, then not for long. The predominant part of winter allows people living in the northern region to feel comfortable enough.

What nationalities live in Syktyvkar?

First of all, it should be noted that the capital of Komi is an international large administrative center. Favorable living conditions attract people from more remote peripheral regions of the North. At the moment, with an accuracy of one, it is not easy to calculate the number of Syktyvkar residents. However, without difficulty, we can say that according to the latest census of 2015, their number is about 250 thousand people. It turns out that about a third of those living in the Komi Republic are residents of the capital.

Previous data obtained as a result of the collection of information over the past couple of years, do not significantly differ from the number indicated. State statistics bodies emphasize that in general for a few years the number of people in Syktyvkar has increased by 2%, and this is approximately 5 thousand people.

In addition, many are concerned about the percentage of living nationalities and nationalities here. In particular, they often ask themselves about how many Russians and Komi live here. How many? The population of Syktyvkar mainly consists of these nationalities. It turns out that there are twice as many Russian people here as indigenous people. Komi in the capital of the republic about a third of all residents. Approximately 10 percent of all other residents are Ukrainians, Nenets, Tatars. Also among the townspeople you can often meet Azerbaijanis, Arabs, Greeks, Britons, Yakuts, Finns, Czechs and many others.

Why are there more Russians than the Komi?

The trend towards the predominant number of Russians has changed about a century ago. Then the indigenous inhabitants of Komi were a clear majority: out of ten local people, only one person was Russian. Such cardinal changes in the national composition of the local population were due to the migration policy developed at that time . The political prisoners were exiled to the northern cities not only to serve hard labor. As a punishment, the authorities were deprived of their opportunities to live in more cozy warm cities, moving to the end of the days to the northern part of Russia.

Increase in population

Not only in the Komi Republic, but also in many Russian regions, the trend of young people has been preserved to this day from the outbacks closer to the center. In villages there is no possibility to get a full higher education, to find a worthy highly qualified work. The population of the city of Syktyvkar is constantly increasing due to visitors from the Far North. This is confirmed by statistics. Syktyvkartsev is getting bigger every year, the reason for which is an unhindered migration flow.

If we take into account the natural increase in the population, then we can also note a positive dynamics. Over the past few years, it has been possible not only to equalize the demographic indicators, but also to move forward. So far, it can be said with certainty that fertility prevails over the mortality rate by only 1.5%. Although these indicators are considered quite favorable, since a few years ago the situation developed in a more dramatic scenario.

Average age indicator

It should be noted that the average age of the population is moving inexorably upwards. If not so long ago, these indicators barely reached the limit of 35.5 years, today this category confidently occupies the mark of 36.3 years. The young population of Syktyvkar, in particular, the number of people under the age of 14, fell by 3%, and the number of people able to work and bring income to the state did not increase either - their number decreased by more than 1%. At the same time pensioners in Syktyvkar became much more, almost by a quarter. Naturally, for the economy of the republic this is a huge problem. To maintain the maximum balance, the leadership of the state has to go for very unpopular reforms, in particular, an increase in the retirement age.

From here, as you can see, the changes have affected the age structure of the residents. Pensioners make up almost 20% of the population, about the same number and children. The rest is made up of able-bodied people.

Male and female issues

Considering the percentage ratio of men and women residing in the city, equality does not have to wait. 45% by 55% - thus it is possible to present a gender picture in Syktyvkar. The situation with the sex ratio is deteriorating every year. The female population prevails over the male. However, this state of affairs can not be called characteristic only for the capital of the Komi Republic. On the territory of the whole country, there are 13 women on average for 10 men. A high level of premature death among able-bodied men is the main reason demographers call.

The next question arising from the previous one is the statistics of the family relations of the Syktyvkar people over 16 years old. As it turned out, 1000 women have slightly more than 500 married men. At the same time, 225 women from the above-mentioned thousand never heard Mendelssohn's march, 115 had time to break marriage ties and about the same number had become widows. Out of a thousand men, almost a third consider themselves incorrigible bachelors, 64 are divorced, and more than 600 are currently happily married. Of these, one-fifth is in civilian.

Level of education of Syktyvkar residents

An important factor in the life of the Republic of Komi is the employment of the population. Syktyvkar is a leading industrial center, therefore the majority of the able-bodied population has a specialized education. About a third of the residents of the capital have diplomas on higher and incomplete higher education. Those who graduated only from school are approximately the same. Another third have secondary special education: they graduated from technical schools, lyceums and vocational schools. The rest (about 5%) have only a basic level of education.

In Syktyvkar 72% of all doctors and candidates of sciences in Komi are engaged in scientific and teaching activities. Extras note that among those who defended his doctoral thesis, more than men, and among those who are candidates, - women.

People working for the benefit of the economy of the capital, most of it. This number is about 120 thousand townspeople. In the working age of 15 to 72 years, such people represent more than 65% of employed persons.

The economic industrial sector

The predominant branch of Syktyvkar is logging, wood processing and pulp and paper production. This sector of the economy accounts for about 60% of manufactured goods. Separately it is necessary to allocate a timber industry complex Syktyvkar (SPLK), in the functioning of which about 15,000 workers are involved. This is one of the most developed pulp and paper manufacturing enterprises in the northern part of Russia. More than 700 thousand tons of uncoated paper, cellulose, cardboard are manufactured here annually.

15 years ago a subsidiary of the Syktyvkar Plywood Plant was separated from the SPLK. He is rightfully considered the largest manufacturer of large plywood. The history of existence and successful operation of the plant originates from 1976.

Healthcare sphere in the republic

The social protection of the population deserves special consideration. Syktyvkar as a major administrative Russian center in any sphere of public relations is guided by the legislation of the state. However, due to some autonomous powers, which are vested in the local authorities of the republic, it is possible to identify significant differences. For example, in the field of healthcare in the territory of the Komi Republic, the social health program "Health" was successfully introduced for the employed population. It involves the passage of regular examinations of the body by working citizens on a free basis. The only thing that has not been changed is the mandatory availability of an insurance medical insurance policy. Without it, citizens can not apply for social medical assistance.

Problems of education in Syktyvkar

The question of education in Syktyvkar is quite acute. Despite the existence of general education institutions, including more than two dozen schools, several gymnasiums and lyceums, boarding schools, two art schools and an institution for children with disabilities, pre-school institutions are not so easy to find.

In the period of the so-called perestroika of the late 20th century, the child birth rate has significantly decreased, and therefore the need for many kindergartens has disappeared. The buildings were re-profiled for other purposes and given under the direction of numerous departments. At present, the population suffers from a shortage of kindergartens, and therefore the authorities of the republic constantly put this issue on the agenda.
