Paper chalked - what is it? Paper coated with matte and glossy

Paper chalked - what is it? This is a special printed polygraphic material for images and inscriptions of various formats, produced on certain equipment. The surface of the paper is porous, having selective absorption of typographic paints. The material is used in the production of advertising and information products, souvenirs, interior decoration, design work and so on.

Coated paper for inkjet printing: features

Coated material is impregnated with only a small part of the paint, which has a solvent in the composition. Pigment and light film remain on the surface of the paper. Thanks to this effect, the image is clear and colorful. When a special protective coating is applied, the picture is retained longer, it becomes more saturated and attractive than on any other paper.

In doing so, pay attention to the density of coated paper. This material is divided into 15 different categories responsible for the compaction of structural fibers. For color printing , a material whose density is 115 g / m 2 is used . Such paper slightly absorbs color ink and is less enlightened in the light.

When printing a two-sided image, try to apply the images to each other without any distortion.

Coated paper: types and production

The product contains components such as cellulose pulp, various fillers and coated matter. The paper itself is divided into the following types:

1. Number of sides:

- one-sided printing (for labels);

- Two-sided standard application.

2. Surfaces:

- Matte paper is used most often for text inscriptions, a distinguishing feature is the rigidity and opacity of the material;

- semi-mat paper provides an average type of finish;

- glossy material - improved image quality, smoothness and less dusting of paper.

3. Number of layers:

- Single-layer paper;

- two-layer material;

- Three layers of coating, providing better smoothness and whiteness.

4. Sheet weight:

- light to 60-65 g / m 2 ;

- medium - 70-155 g / m 2 ;

- heavy (high density of paper) - 150 g / m 2 and above;

5. Formats of coated paper:

- sheets packed in packs for convenience of storage and transportation;

- rolls designed for drying.

How is coated paper made?

Pulp is the main ingredient from which paper is coated. What is this process in printing houses? Paper production is divided into several stages:

  1. Sealing of the main component. The weight of cellulose, consisting of 5-6 percent of the main ingredient and 94-95% of water, is placed on the mobile mesh of the production equipment. Under the press, the water is gradually squeezed out, and the working fiber remains on the net. It has a front and a back (mesh) side.
  2. Adhesion. In order for coated paper and paperboard to absorb less ink and paints, the fibers are impregnated with certain sticky substances using production machines. Sometimes the sizing is carried out at the end of the fabrication, which is called "surface treatment". Most often, rosin is used for processing fibers, but various synthetic components can also be used.
  3. Calendering. The preparatory material is laid on the heating elements, which rotate, dry and press the fibers, giving them a smooth effect. It is at this time that the canvas turns into paper. The longer the material is under the press, the more future paper will be transparent and less convex. The main difficulty of this stage is to balance the smoothness and opacity.

Final action

Coated paper A4, as in rolls, is formed already at this stage of production. This process is similar to the previous step, but using softer plastic coated rolls, at the end the paper becomes matte or glossy.

Then begins the coating process, which consists of the following steps. The paper that has been processed is covered with a special solution one or more times. Drying is used with the coating method, but sometimes some manufacturers refuse the drying process, which is called the technology of the wet method in the language of the experts. In special cases, the treatment can be carried out in three layers, whereas once it is coated with glossy paper.

Properties and features of coated paper

Choosing and applying such a paper, you should pay attention to its features, which consist in density, transparency, roughness, purity of white color, humidity and so on.

Manufacturers of coated paper, for the most part, under the same brand represent more than 10 varieties of products of different density groups, which start from 70 g / m 2 to 350 g / m 2 (cardboard).

Matte or glossy coated paper should be resistant to plucking by Dennisen from 4 to 7 points, which allows the ink to absorb well into the upper layers of the fibers.

Application of the material

Paper chalked - what is it, how to recognize it and see it? The most interesting is that we see this material every day, buying glossy magazines, encyclopedias, books, advertising brochures and so on in newsagents and bookshops. Manufacturers of this product in the modern paper market a lot, the competition is high, because the quality of products are closely monitored.

Also on this paper color colored images are printed - stickers, advertisement of household appliances, calendars, posters for billboards and other information and printed products.

Is it harmful or not coated paper?

This issue is not fun, since there is a certain category of people (ecologists) who consider this type of paper very harmful and do not recommend using products based on coated material. What are their arguments?

Environmentalists consider all beautiful and expensive books and magazines harmful to health, since the purity and whiteness of the paper is provided by the chemical component - dioxin, used in the manufacture of high-quality products. At the same time, they argue that low-quality prints contain a lot of zinc and are also harmful to humans. In their opinion, offset paper is the safest product. With the last statement many experts agree, but with all the remaining arguments can be argued.

Refuting the harmfulness of coated paper

Indeed, manufacturers sometimes use dioxide to make high-quality coated paper. What kind of chemical is this? It is a titanium dioxide, responsible for the purity and whiteness of the material. However, it is expensive, and modern factories for the production of printing paper mainly use other, cheaper and less harmful components, such as kaolin. Even predicted in the future to apply for bleaching fibers ordinary chalk.

Experts emphasize that the proportion of dioxide in the ingredients for the treatment of coated paper is very small, especially since it goes along with castor oil, which reduces the radiation background of the dioxide.

Where is the most common coated material?

Paper coated is often used for making magazines, especially if you need to depict a high-quality illustration, some reproduction, advertising expensive products and the like. A variety of information weeklies, business publications that focus on the text, rather than pictures, prefer to use less expensive and glossy paper, such as offset coated paper.

Also the coated material is preferred by publishers of various catalogs of cosmetics, clothes and household products. In addition to high-quality image and beautiful appearance, fingerprints do not remain on such paper, which allows the catalog to remain in presentable form for longer.

Wall calendars are also printed on coated paper. However, such products are better perceived without glare and gloss. Therefore, for the production of wall calendars, paper coated matte is used. It does not change its shade under the influence of light, does not turn yellow and is more resistant to the humidity of the air inside the room.

The result

Thus, it becomes clear that coated paper is widely used in printing products. We deal with it almost constantly, buying a magazine, looking through booklets in supermarkets or leaflets from the sale, catalogs with cosmetics and household goods. This high-quality paper is produced by a complex technology, with numerous gentle impregnations, long drying and other technological methods that give it a glossy effect and a snow-white color.

Coated material is widely used when it is necessary to depict a clear and rich illustration, image or any picture. Unfortunately, many domestic manufacturers of printed products, trying to save on paper, use poor-quality paper, which not only increases the wear of the product, but also negatively represents one or another printed information.

In addition, it must be borne in mind that the paper described acquires its excellent qualities after the use of special chemicals that remain in the structure of the material after impregnation and can have a negative impact on human health, especially children. It should be added here that printing ink and dyes can be based on inorganic substances that harm a person when ingested. But this does not mean that you do not need to read and buy printed products, but you just have to be cautious, remembering that all sorts of chemical substances that are part of printing ink and coated paper can remain in your hands.
