Palace of the Republic (Almaty): history, description, location

The Palace of the Republic (Almaty) is one of the most interesting and functional architectural structures of the southern capital of Kazakhstan. The building, built during the Soviet period, still strikes today with the refinement of style and the originality of constructive solutions.

The Palace of the Republic is the largest concert venue of the city. Also here are various government meetings, festive events, forums, festivals.

The 100th anniversary of the leader of the revolution is dedicated

Since 1967, the Kazakh Republic, like the entire Soviet Union, has begun to prepare for the celebration of Lenin's jubilee. On the eve of this date, it was decided to reconstruct one of the longest streets of the city - the avenue bearing the name of the founder of the socialist state. At that time, there was a project developed by the architect A.P. Sokolov-Zeman, providing for the building of the slope of Koktobe mountain, on top of which it was planned to build the building of the House of Soviets of Kazakhstan.

This grandiose plan required great material costs, since during construction it was necessary to take into account the high seismicity of the terrain. Therefore, in the end, we decided to manage the improvement of the central part of the city of Alma-Ata (this was the name of Almaty until 1991). In 1970, the grand opening of the Palace was held, which was named after the founder of the Soviet state.

Features of construction and decoration of the building

The Palace of the Republic (Almaty) was erected on a specially designed project using the latest building materials at that time. Roofing area of 10 000 square meters. M hold eight reinforced concrete pillars, installed at some distance from the main structure. Thanks to this engineering solution, the visibility is created that the roof has no points of contact with the object, as if floating in the air.

The facade is decorated with shell rock, the interiors are faced with white marble. In the auditorium, designed for 3000 seats, panels of valuable wood were installed, which allowed to provide high acoustic characteristics of the room. To ensure cooling of the walls and coolness in the inner halls, the Palace of the Republic (Almaty) was equipped with a unique air conditioning system, which was fed with ice water from the Malaya Almatinka River, which starts in the Alatau mountains.

The project, designed by architects L. Ukhobotov, V.Kim, J.Ratushny, N.Ripinsky, V.Alla with the participation of engineers A.Sokolov and B.Delov, in 1971 was awarded the All-Union State Prize.

From plenums and meetings to enchanting shows

The spacious hall of the building was used for various events of city and republican significance: party plenums, solemn celebrations of the heroes of labor, meetings of trade union and public organizations. At the same time, the Palace of the Republic (Almaty) has been a popular stage for nearly 50 years now.

In different years, the voices of opera masters and pop stars were heard under his arches. Almaty audience enthusiastically accepted such outstanding artists as Alibek Dnishev, Rosa Rymbayeva, Nagima Escalieva, Iosif Kobzon, Valentina Tolkunova, Alla Pugacheva and many others. And today the poster of the Palace of the Republic in Almaty is pleased with announcements of performances of artists from all over the world.

Parades of brass bands are held on the square adjacent to the building, bearing the name of the Kazakh poet and thinker Abai Kunanbayev, an annual Christmas tree is set, music festivals are held, folk festivities in honor of the national holiday Nauryz.

Modern appearance update

During the reconstruction carried out in 2010-2011. The appearance of the Palace and its interior were changed. On the facade, decorated with glass panels, the areas used for the installation of billboards were significantly expanded, and the auditorium lost 433 seats. But then there was an orchestra pit, a conference hall, a recording studio that meets all modern standards of buffet, as well as convenient facilities for staff.

In the register of monuments of urban planning and architecture among other remarkable objects of the republic is the Palace of the Republic (Almaty). The address of the building is Dostyk Avenue 56. One of the highest buildings of the city is a twenty-five-story hotel "Kazakhstan", and just above the Palace there is a cinema "Arman", where already in the seventies of the last century there were stereo movies created using technology, 3D.

Former Alma-Ata was one of the most beautiful and advanced cities of the Soviet Union. Present Almaty, even having lost the capital status, to hand over the won positions is not going to.
