Moscow way of growing seedlings: advice and feedback

Often, when growing seedlings, gardeners face various difficulties. That seeds do not germinate, then there is not enough space on the windowsill. And it happens that after sowing they do not rise. Then they sow one more time, but already with handfuls, to be sure. And soon a green, dense brush appears on the surface. Quickly break through, so that the plants do not stretch. Well, trouble with this seedling!

It turns out that they are to blame for their failures. After all, there is a Moscow method of growing seedlings. It is very convenient to use it in an apartment.

Landless way of growing seedlings

As the name suggests, seedlings can be grown without the use of soil.

This is convenient because not everyone in February has harvested land. Seeds can be used much less, because they do not need to be broken. But I have to spend a little time.

Another name for this interesting method is self-rolling.

Seedlings in this way are obtained as follows:

  • The polyethylene film is cut into long ribbons 10 cm wide.
  • Two layers of toilet paper are laid on the film (if one layered, then one is enough).
  • Wet the film with water at room temperature.
  • A centimeter off the edge, spread the seeds in 1, 2 or 3 cm (depending on the culture) along the entire length of the tape.
  • Repeat the procedure in reverse order: cover with a layer of paper, moisten, if necessary, put on top a layer of polyethylene film (you can and without it).
  • Carefully fold the tape into a roll without tightening or shifting the seeds, fix it with an elastic band, thread or wire.
  • Take the roll into the hand so that the seeds are at the top, and put into a glass with water. It is desirable to add a growth stimulant. It protects against diseases, strengthens immunity, shortens the period of survival.
  • Water should not reach the level of seeds for a couple of centimeters.
  • Sign the name of the variety, so as not to forget.
  • Cover the top with a film, but it is not safe to let the air pass.
  • Water should be periodically changed to fresh, so that the glass does not start to mold.

When the seeds germinate and green sprouts appear from the film, it is desirable to feed them with mineral fertilizers (humic for seedlings), reducing the dose two times against the usual method.

Repeat top dressing is necessary when the first real leaf is formed.

Planting

Act depending on the culture. If the seedlings need to be dived, one can use one of the following methods:

  • Each germinating seed is placed in a film measuring 20 × 20 cm. Add a couple spoons of prepared soil and wrap it so that the top is open. All the kulechki set in one box. Pour carefully, so as not to overhydrate. Ten days before planting, add a spoonful of soil.
  • Plant the sprouts in separate cups or cassettes, while you can remove the plants from paper or plant with it, previously cutting the tape into pieces.

In work, you can use tweezers, which helps not to damage the plants.

If the seedling does not need to dive, then it is planted immediately in the ground.

What sow

The Moscow way of growing seedlings is not suitable for large seeds, for example, legumes, corn.

But for every little thing, which is usually hard to germinate, the very time.

This is pepper, tomatoes, eggplants, cabbage, carrots, parsnips, onions. A lot of flowers, such as asters, petunias, violas, delphiniums.

It is possible to germinate the seeds of cucumbers and melons, but only for planting grains into the soil. If the leaves start to form, then the plants become very uncomfortable.

Growing strawberries by landless means

Favorite strawberries are usually grown from seedlings.

But often we meet seeds of various repairing varieties that we would like to have. After all, they do not form a mustache and delight the harvest until late autumn. But since there are no outgrowths, how can they be multiplied? Collect the seeds and germinate them.

Those who have tried to grow strawberry seedlings know that it is difficult to do. If the seeds are deepened into the earth, they will not ascend. And from the top wither from lack of moisture. Therefore, the Moscow way of growing strawberry seedlings will be very useful. And if you consider that when growing strawberries from seeds, practically do not transmit the disease of this culture, then the benefits are double.

But first the seeds must be stratified for three months in wet calcined sand at a temperature of 2-4 degrees. Sowed in greenhouses in December, at home - in February.

Plant in the cassettes can be a half, or even two months! The plant should have one or two real leaves by this time.

Advantages of the landless method

Seeds:

  • Germinate well;
  • Do not hit with a black leg;
  • Occupy less space.

Sowing tomatoes in boxes, we put seeds in the expectation that they will not get up well. And almost always we get thickened shoots. The Moscow way of growing tomato seedlings makes it possible to get rid of this problem. After all, all seeds are equidistant from each other. And if any does not rise, then it will be unnoticeable on the roll. When planting, it is necessary to break off the third part of the root in order to form a strong root system.

disadvantages

Some sources argue that the Moscow method of growing seedlings does not allow growing plants with a well-formed root system.

They say that the seedlings are not well illuminated in the roll. This leads to their stretching. Therefore, for plants that require picking (tomato, pepper, cabbage), not the best is the Moscow method of growing seedlings. The comments of many gardeners, however, suggest that they have successfully used this method for a long time and are very pleased with the result.

Cultivation of onion seedlings

For many cold-resistant crops, this method is simply indispensable.

The Moscow way of growing onion seedlings makes it possible to get beautiful saplings without problems. They are planted on a permanent place together with a piece of paper. It is only necessary to correctly determine the sowing period, so that you do not have to put it in the frozen ground. This is about the second week of April.

It should be noted that some sources claim that the landless method is not suitable for onions and other small-seed crops. Perhaps, something was broken technology.

Growing petunia seedlings

Ordinary varieties of petunia reproduce themselves, giving a large amount of planting material in spring. But with the charming variety of hybrids there are often problems. No matter how hard you try, there are very few sprouts. And they soon fall, as if they were knocked down, hit by a black leg. The Moscow way of growing petunia seedlings helps to get the right amount of plants. Despite the fact that the flower is rather capricious in growing.

Probably, someone does not approach the Moscow way of growing seedlings, and he gives advantage to somebody else. But, undoubtedly, this method reliably took its place among others.
