The man to whom we owe the very fact of the existence of this museum was called Ivan Vladimirovich Tsvetaev. The idea of creating such an institution in Moscow for a long time circulated in the circles of the aristocracy and enlightened Russian intelligentsia. But the distance between the idea and its embodiment seemed to many to be insurmountable. To do this was destined to the historian and theoretician of arts I.V. Tsvetaeva. In order for the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts existed in the form in which it is known to us today, two factors had to merge: the financial power of Russian entrepreneurship growing in the beginning of the century and the talent of architects and builders. Honored professor of Moscow University and a doctor of Roman literature Tsvetaeva managed to - merchants and industrialists to bring together architects, artists and builders. We had to overcome many difficulties, both financial and technical. The unique in scope and complexity of construction stretched for 14 years. IV Tsvetaev was the first director of the museum. He died shortly after his discovery.

How the collection was formed

The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts was still in the process of building a set of plaster copies of ancient sculptures and architectural fragments. They were executed on casts from the originals of the world 's famous museums. The artistic meeting was formed from different sources throughout the twentieth century. Some of the funds were transferred from the Hermitage in Soviet times.
