Missing operating system: what to do with the error?

One of the most unpleasant and shocking users of messages at the start of the operating system is the appearance on the black screen of the Missing operating system. What to do with 'nbv, do not know everything, because, it would seem, yesterday the computer or laptop worked quite normal, and nothing like that was noticed. But do not despair. Of course, the problem can be quite serious, especially with regard to the physical failure of the hard disk, but in many cases, if the failure is not connected to the hard drive, it can be eliminated with several simple methods.

Download: Missing operation system. What does this error mean?

First, a few words about what this crash is all about. As you know, the computer's hard disk has, firstly, a special system partition in which the operating system is installed, and secondly, boot partitions and records that are responsible for starting the OS.

So, what to do with the Missing operating system? Let's just translate this line. Based on a literal translation, this means a lost operating system. In other words, the computer accesses the boot records, directly to the boot loader and the system partition, and does not find the installed OS. Why?

Where did the system go? Missing operating system: causes of failure

Indeed, where could the operating system get to, if the user did not reinstall it, did not delete the system files and did not perform any actions at all, which, in his opinion, could affect the operability of the OS? Unfortunately, in most cases this opinion is erroneous. The fact is that the system itself is not immune from failures that do not depend on the user.

But, suppose the user saw the Missing operating system line on the computer screen at startup. What to do with the error - it will be clear after finding out the reasons for its appearance. And among them, the following are the main ones:

  • Incorrect boot priority settings in BIOS;
  • Incorrect parameters of the initialization and operation mode of the HDD;
  • Errors on the hard disk;
  • Bootloader and boot sectors corruption;
  • Wear of the hard drive;
  • Exposure to viruses.

Troubleshoot problems with BIOS settings

One of the most common problems is the incorrectly set download priority, and very many users forget about it. Perhaps, last time the user just played the game using removable media (for example, DVD), maybe BIOS settings "flew" by themselves, who knows ...

But back to the Missing operating system error. What to do in the simplest case? It is necessary to use a key or key combinations at startup and enter the primary input / output system, called the BIOS.

Here you need to find the boot partition (usually called Boot, Boot Sequence, Boot Priority, or something like that) and look at the order of the devices from which the operating system starts. Suppose that the first DVD-ROM (optical drive) is installed in the list, the second one is a removable USB device, and only the HDD HDD (Hard Drive) is the third in the queue.

Suppose, at the moment, there is no optical disk in the optical disc drive (or a system disk, for example, with a game is inserted) or a USB flash drive is inserted into the USB port, again, not with a bootable distribution, but with regular files. So it turns out that there is no boot records on these media, neither the boot loader nor the operating system, which leads to the appearance of the Missing operating system line. What to do in this situation? There are two options: either to remove all removable media and restart, or install as the first HDD device (in the BIOS on the 1-st Boot Device line, the PgUp / PgDown keys are usually used, but sometimes other combinations can be used to move the HDD line From the lowest to the higher location). After saving the settings by pressing the F10 (Save & Exit) key and confirming the saving of the parameters (Y or OK), the reboot will remain. If the problem was exactly this, it will disappear.

In extreme cases, in SATA HDD modes, you can set the IDE parameter instead of AHCI, which sometimes helps to fix the problem.

Hard Drive Problems

Worse things are, when the root cause is the hard drive itself. It is possible that in this case the Missing operating system line may appear on the screen. What to do? Again, there may be several options, depending on the nature of the problem.

Let's start with the worst - the situation when the hard drive became unusable or, as it's called, began to pour. It is usually impossible to fix a problem, however, as a last resort, you can try to reanimate the hard drive using the utility HDD Regenerator, which is said to be able to remagnetize the hard drive.

Using the Shell

But if the hard drive is "alive", you can first check it for errors, and then perform a bootloader recovery or even completely overwrite the boot sector.

To do this, you must boot from any installation or recovery schematic media, setting it in the BIOS parameters of the first device, and invoke the command line (usually a combination of Shift + F10 for quick access or one of the GUI menu sections).

First, the hard drive is checked for errors with automatic correction. To do this, enter the command chkdsk c: / x / f / r, and then enter the boot recovery lines bootrec.exe / fix mbr and bootrec.exe / fixboot.

After that, you can try to boot the system by removing the removable media.

If this does not help, the boot sector is completely overwritten, only this time in the command console (again, when booted from removable media) the line bootrec.exe / rebuildbcd is written. But this option helps almost always.

Additional Actions

In principle, the above were the most basic solutions that allow you to reanimate the boot of the operating system if the problems are not related to physical damage to the hard drive. However, this is not the only thing that can happen. The fact is that some viruses are also capable of causing such situations.

In this case, it is highly recommended to check the entire computer system for threats, using utilities such as Kaspersky Rescue Disk or similar development from Dr.Web. Web. They need to be written to a removable media and used as the first device for downloading (they have their own boot records). Such utilities, by the way, are able to detect even those deeply hidden viruses that ordinary standard scanners or security means in the running system are missing.
