Level of knowledge of English: a bit of theory and practice

For anyone who studies any foreign language, it is important to know your level of ownership. This is necessary first of all for those who plan to enter universities, start work or practice abroad. How to determine the level of English, which is one of the most common today in the world?

Of course, you can get acquainted with the existing criteria and find it out yourself. But will such an assessment be adequate? In addition, you will not receive any document confirming your level of knowledge of English. Therefore, it is best to apply to special schools where you will be asked to take a test. Pay attention to the fact that the institution had the necessary certificate for its conduct.

So what is the level of knowledge of English?

Null

Do not rush to take a zero. This level may be for those who have never encountered English. For example, if the school taught French. Beginners first learn the alphabet, pronunciation and so on. So, most likely, this knowledge has remained with you from school, and recording in the "zero" group will be a waste of time and money.

Elementary

This level of knowledge of the English language can be assigned to those whose competence is limited to the primary classes of the school. If you know some simple words and stable phrases like "How are you?", But you can not build a coherent sentence, then an elementary level is right for you.

Upper-Elementary

A person is able to build simple sentences, as well as understand the speaker. Vocabulary should be sufficient to be able to "survive" abroad. For example, you already know how to ask, where is the cafe here, and also you can place an order there.

Pre-Intermediate

On the average lower level, you are already able to communicate without difficulty on simple topics and speak without errors. A foreigner can understand you, but if he speaks slowly and clearly, then you too. In principle, it is already permissible to try an international format test, such as Cambridge PET or TOEFL. The result, of course, will not be very high, but why not try?

Intermediate

Do not believe the name. In fact, the average level of English is difficult. You should be able to communicate freely on various topics, let the vocabulary is sometimes not enough, and sometimes you have to think about grammar. The level of English language intermediate will already allow you to pass an international exam on average scores.

Upper-Intermediate

You are free to talk and do not make mistakes. If the test confirms this level, then you have the opportunity to go to a foreign university or get a job there, which does not require complex highly specialized communication. Upper-intermediate is required in most institutions of higher education.

Advanced

On Advanced you know a lot of terms, steady turns, which you use actively in your speech. Having passed the exam at this level, you are almost one hundred percent going to any university abroad. Above this level there are several more, but most likely you will achieve them when you already live in England.
