Irrigoscopy of the intestine is one of the most informative methods of colon research

Irrigoscopy of the intestine is one of the types of X-ray examination of the digestive system. Despite the use of other diagnostic methods, this procedure   Can not be replaced by any other study. Irrigoscopy of the intestine is a method for diagnosing colon diseases, carried out after filling it with an X-ray contrast substance. As a contrast, the most commonly used solution is barium sulfate, which is introduced into the intestines in a retrograde way.

Indications and contraindications for the study

Indications for the appointment of irrigoscopy of the intestine:

Congenital malformations of the large intestine;

- Tumors;

Diverticulosis and diverticulitis;

- chronic colitis of various etiologies;

- cicatricial narrowing of the intestine.

Irrigoscopy of the intestine is contraindicated with the possible perforation of the intestinal wall, the severe condition of the subject.

The diagnostic value of irrigoscopy largely depends on the quality of the preparation of the patient. The goal of the preparation is the maximum possible release of the intestine from gases, food debris, mucus, and liquid that interfere with the research.

Preparation for Irrigoscopy

Preparation for irrigoscopy is carried out for three days before the scheduled study. From food, products that cause the formation of gases in the digestive tract are excluded: milk, rye bread, legumes, potatoes, cabbage, sweets. The patient should take easily digestible food, which gives a small amount of slag and does not irritate the intestinal mucosa.

To reduce the phenomena of flatulence for three days before the study, the patient should take adsorbents, that is activated charcoal or carbolenum 2 tablets three times a day. Tablets of activated carbon can be replaced with a warm decoction of medicinal chamomile, which must be drunk for 200-300 ml during the day. To prepare the broth, one tablespoon of dried camomile flowers is brewed 200-250 ml of boiling water, insisted for half an hour and taken inside after percolation.

With persistent constipation, it is recommended to take laxatives, with the exception of salt preparations, which irritate the intestinal mucosa causing meteorism. In addition to laxatives for the liberation of the intestine, you can do a light massage of the abdomen, special exercises of physiotherapy. The day before the examination, it is necessary to stop taking medications that reduce tone and peristalsis of the intestine.

On the eve of irrigoscopy after lunch, the patient should drink 40-50 ml of vegetable oil. In the evening after supper, two cleansing enemas are made to release and rinse the bowels with an exercise interval of half an hour. In the morning, two to three hours before the examination should be limited to a light breakfast. After 30-40 minutes after breakfast for a complete cleansing of the intestine, you should again make a cleansing enema, which will have to be repeated in half an hour.

Immediately before the irrigoscopy, the large intestine is filled with an X-ray contrast solution, after which X-rays of different parts of the intestine are made in different positions of the patient. After removal of the contrast material from the intestine, an X-ray examination of the relief of the mucosa of the large intestine is carried out. If there is a suspicion of a tumor, the intestinal irrigoscopy is performed with additional filling of the intestine with air, which allows a more detailed examination of the changes in the mucosa. This method is called double-contrast irrigation.

If an irrigoscopy of the intestine is prescribed, the preparation for the study should be carried out in full, recommended by the doctor. Otherwise, the results of the study will be incorrect.
