Ioannovsky Bridge (St. Petersburg): photo, description and history of the architectural monument

One of the most visited sights of the city on the Neva is the Peter and Paul Fortress. It is known to be located on the island. And you can get to it only one way - through the Ioannovsky Bridge. What is interesting about this monument of urban architecture? And when was it built?

How to get to Ioannovskiy Bridge?

The Peter and Paul Fortress (the most valuable monument of the defensive architecture of the XVIII century) is located on the Hare Island. With the "big earth" (the Petrograd Island), it connects only two bridges. This is Kronwerk (in the western part) and the Ioannovsky Bridge (in the eastern part).

It's not difficult to get to it. This can be done on the metro station by going to the "Gorkovskaya" station and walking for about 5 minutes, by tram (No. 6 or No. 40) or by city bus (No. 46 or No. 134). On trams Nos. 2, 53 and 63, you can also drive to Troitskaya Square. And from there to the Ioannovsky Bridge - it's a stone's throw away.

The bridge is not only an important architectural landmark of the city. At any time of the year, there are a lot of wild ducks, gulls and pigeons, who are happy to be fed by tourists. Yes, and the views that open from the bridge - just great!

Ioannovsky Bridge in St. Petersburg: photo and description

The birth of the city is directly connected with the founding of the Peter and Paul Fortress in 1703. It was then that this bridge appeared. True, it was originally called Petrovsky.

The Ioannovsky Bridge in St. Petersburg connects the same gate of the fortress with the Petrograd Island. At the same time, it crosses the Kronverkskiy strait, one of the city channels of the Neva. The bridge is an object of Russia's cultural heritage and is protected by the state.

Today the bridge is completely pedestrian. Its width is 10 meters, and the length is 152 meters. On both sides it is decorated with beautiful lanterns (with figures of two-headed eagles and colorful caps) and patterned iron gratings.

Ioannovsky Bridge and the history of its creation

The hero of our article was destined to become the very first bridge of the "northern capital". It was opened in the distant 1703. Then the bridge rested on wooden beams and consisted of two adjustable parts, which were also made of wood. This structural feature was not an accident. The bridge was designed in such a way that it could be burned at any time (in case of an enemy attack).

At the end of the XIX century, the Ioannovsky Bridge was substantially rebuilt. Through arches under it were laid with a stone. It was then that the bridge got its modern name.

The next serious reconstruction of the bridge took place already in 1952. At the same time, it was decorated with metal lanterns and a lattice decorative fence. In the early 2000s, the bridge survived major repairs. In particular, the arch was strengthened, the arcades were revetted and the pedestrian canvas of the bridge was replaced. Also, work was carried out on the waterproofing of the structure. After all these works, the restorers have confidently stated that the bridge is protected from destruction for the next thirty years.

A touching monument at the bridge ...

Passing along the Ioannovsky Bridge, any tourist will certainly notice an unusual monument located near him. On one of the wooden piles is a small hare. The height of the figure is only 58 centimeters.

The sculpture has its own name. This is "The Monument to the Bunny, Saved from the Flood." According to legend, a frightened animal jumped directly on the tsar's boot of Peter the Great, so as not to perish from the enraged water element.

The figure of the hare was installed in the canal waters in 2003. The monument has no special architectural or historical value, however it is very popular with tourists and visitors of the city. Each of them will certainly try to throw a coin on a tiny pad at the feet of the hare. Incredible luck awaits those who can do it!
