How to translate minutes into hours and vice versa: examples, ways, interesting moments

Let's look at how to translate minutes into hours and vice versa. To begin with, we agree that the knowledge of arithmetic will be required. After all, you can not do without calculations here. If you do not do it in your mind or on a piece of paper, then use the calculator. Below you will find almost all the options for how to translate minutes into hours.

From ancient times to the present

Look at the dial. It has 60 divisions, that is 60 seconds (minutes). Who is friends with mathematics, he has long noticed that this science is like a focus, mysticism, thereby amusing. The ancient people were no more stupider than our contemporaries, on the contrary, they even succeeded in something.

What do we have today:

  • 1 hour is 60 minutes;
  • 1 minute equals 60 seconds;
  • 1 hour contains 3600 seconds.

Of course, 3600 seconds was obtained by multiplying 60 minutes * 60 seconds. Let's take another look at the dial: for example, the hour (short arrow) is at 12, and the minute (long) - shows that now 20 minutes. That is twenty minutes of the first. Now consider how to translate minutes into hours with this example.

Simple and complex calculations up to 1 hour

Remember the arithmetic in elementary school and grade 5: there were fractions. What are we getting at? 1 hour = 60 min. And we only have 20 minutes. It can be incorrect to note that only 20/60 hours have passed. But we know that fractions can be reduced. Let's do that:

20/60 = 1/3.

Total passed 1/3 hours or, if we divide, then 0.33.

Consider another option: what does a quarter of an hour mean? How do I convert minutes to hours in reverse?

1/4 hours = 15 minutes. How did it happen?

15 minutes / 60 min. = 1/4.

How to correctly record 10 minutes in a clock? The technique of the solution is indentic:

10 min./60 min. = 1/6 hour = 0.167 hours. Clearly, such a record is incorrect, therefore it is recommended not to translate 10 minutes.

More than an hour

Many of us have seen, as, for example, written in the annotation for the film its duration: 150 min. How to transfer minutes to hours in this case? Note that there will be no more fractions. Why? Because in the previous section it was about time that lasted less than 1 hour. And now, on the contrary, everything. It will be easy to look on the one hand, but it's actually more difficult.

So, back to 150 minutes. To not think long, let's mentally sum up 60 minutes until we reach the coveted 150: 60 min. + 60 min. = 120. We must stop, because if you add 60 more minutes, it will be 180, and we have only 150 minutes of cinema. We return to our 120 minutes. Of course, this is 2 hours. And now from 150 minutes we will subtract 120. It will turn out 30.

You can do it differently. Stop for 120 minutes and mentally catch up with the missing half an hour. Here's the result for you: 150 min. = 2 hours 30 minutes. = 2.5 hours.

And how to get from 1.5 hours a minute? Immediately submit 1 hour 30 minutes: 60 + 30 = 90 minutes.

Another option: the arithmetic fraction is one integer and five tenths, which after the transformation has the form: 15/10 = 3/2. In fact, 1.5 hours is 3/2 hours.

Imagine a lesson in grade 3, which is associated with fractions. There were also color pictures that clearly showed what 5/6 or 1/2 means.

Why such difficulties are required?

Imagine that you are studying the schedule of electric trains. Typically, write, for example, travel time: 1 hour 5 minutes. It seems that everything is clear. But let's imagine how much this is in minutes? 65 minutes. Other: 2 hours 35 minutes? Let's calculate:

2 hours = 120 minutes, add another 35 minutes. As a result: 120 + 35 = 155 minutes.

So we looked at how to translate minutes into hours and vice versa. In order to be able to quickly calculate, it is desirable to know the basics of mathematics. If you do not get a mental calculation, you should solve the problem on a piece of paper.
