How to install Linux on your personal computer

You may need to install Linux on a personal computer for a variety of reasons. Some PC users have such a desire simply because they like to explore new programs, test operating systems. Someone, perhaps, just tired of the Windows OS, and the third, perhaps, somewhere read that this is a highly reliable OS.

This can be the Gparted program, which goes along with the standard set of the above Ubuntu 11.10. Also, during the installation of the OS, you can partition or use the program for Windows. We continue to consider the question of how to install Linux on your personal computer. After downloading the image, it should be placed on a DVD-ROM or USB flash drive. With this, probably, there will be no problems, and you can proceed to the next step. This will be the start of the process of installing the Linux OS on the hard drive of your personal computer.

First, you need to install the BIOS from the media that was selected. Whether it's a CD / DVD, or a USB drive. Simply when you boot the PC, you will need to press the corresponding key on the keyboard. Usually this is F8, F10, but there may be another key. After entering the BIOS, we make the necessary settings, and the download of the new operating system begins.

You will be prompted to choose the OS language "Linux". It's easy to guess that the majority of users who read this guide choose Russian or Ukrainian. It is possible that someone will choose English or some other of the proposed ones. All in your hands.

Next, you will see the menu on your monitor screen. It consists of five items, which are options for booting the OS "Linux Ubuntu" and its installation. Choose what will be most appropriate for you. If there is an Internet connection, we stop on the first option, offering the launch of the OS without installation. Next, there will be a desktop with icons. First you need to make Internet settings, and then click the icon - Install Ubuntu 11.10. In the window that appears, you must again select the OS language. The installer determines the free space, the presence of a PC connection to the power supply, if it's a laptop, and checks the connection to the Internet. If there is a network connection, check the appropriate checkboxes (checkboxes) in the appeared menu and click - Continue. A new window appears, in which we select the last option to make the settings manually, or any other, to automatically continue the installation of the OS.

Then:

  • The type of the new partition should be selected Logical and set its size. For example, 20,000 is 20 GB.
  • Location - Start.
  • Mount point - /
  • Click- OK.

Next, the swap file section is created . To do this, you need to select all the unallocated space and fill it. The last section will be responsible for your personal files on your PC: photos, movies, games. You just need to repeat the previous operations without changing the size of the new partition. After the partitions are created, they are formatted, and then after clicking the "Install Now" button, the files are copied to the hard disk.
