Hibernation is a kind of sleep mode for a PC

A personal computer at a time when it is not being used can either be completely disabled or may be in sleep mode. Hibernation is one of the types of waiting states. It appeared relatively recently and is available on Windows 7 and 8 operating systems. What are the advantages of hibernation and when is it advantageous to use this mode? This we will discuss in this article.

What is the point?

Hibernation - is the state of the computer in the standby mode, in which the device consumes a minimum of electricity. In this case, all the processes that were started in the system before transferring it to this mode are preserved. Let's look at what happens to a PC when the state of hibernation is activated. At the moment when the user selects the above mode via the "Start" (or by pressing the power button), or when the transfer is scheduled by the system under certain circumstances (for example, when the computer is idle for more than 10 minutes), all programs that were Active and edited documents are instantly stored in the computer's memory. Their disconnection does not occur, that is, when the work is resumed, they will all be opened. During the hibernation, the system freezes with its pre-preservation, and therefore the need for power supply disappears. Of course, the computer continues to use electricity, but in negligible quantities.

How is hibernation enabled and disabled?

This mode can be activated either manually by the user or the system automatically, if necessary parameters are set. Hibernation mode is available on Windows 7 and 8. After entering the Start menu, next to the power off button, you can see several additional state options in which you can transfer the PC. Among them, "sleep" and "hibernation." The user simply needs to click on the desired item and activate this or that mode. How do I turn off hibernation? To output the system from this state, you simply need to perform some action on the keyboard or with the mouse. Restoring all previously running processes is fast. In order to set the automatic start of this mode, it will be necessary to go to the "Control Panel" and select the section "Power supply". In it, you can specify after what period of time the PC will be "put to sleep". The user may want to exclude the "hibernation" mode from the "Start" menu. You can do this as follows:

  • Run the command line (this should be done on behalf of the administrator of the computer);
  • Prescribe the command "powercfg -h off".

Summary

Hibernation is a universal way to keep battery level (if it's a laptop), without losing data. You do not need to disconnect the device, just activate the above function. A similar mode can be used on a regular desktop computer, if necessary, leave it for a while. The main difference from the sleep mode is the preservation of the states of all processes that were active in the system at the time of the "wait" launch, which is an extremely convenient feature.
