How to Divide a Hard Drive Into Sections

Most new computers and laptops have only one disk partition. In the best case, there is a recovery section, but you can not use it as you like. Most experts who produce computers will agree that the disc is better divided into several parts. There are several reasons for this.

Why split a disk into several partitions?

  • In this case, it is more convenient to catalog the data, for example, on one disk there will be documents, and on the other - your grandiose collection of films.
  • If you split the hard drive, there will be less disk fragmentation, therefore, the disk partitions will be easier to maintain.
  • It's safer. If something happens to the system disk, and you lose access to it, or it will have to be formatted, you will not lose valuable data.

What do you need to do to split the hard drive?

In general, in order to break the hard drive you will need some sort of utility. One is built into the Windows operating system itself. But you can use third-party programs. To find them, just go to the search engine and type something like "a program to partition the hard disk into partitions." In particular, we can advise Acronis Disk Director. Since the principle of each of these utilities is the same, we will consider partitioning by standard means. You can easily apply the same algorithm to other utilities.

  • Before you split a disk into partitions, you should do two things: first, to defragment the disk, and secondly to understand what sizes the disks should be.
  • Now you are ready to proceed directly to the breakdown. Go to the "Start" - "Control Panel" - "Administration" - "Computer Management". Find the option "Disk Management".
  • Select the c: \ drive from the drive list and right-click it. Select the item "compress volume".
  • In the new window, enter the amount you specified for the new section in the "size of compressible space" field. Of course, the partition can be compressed only if it is not jammed under the string and the data on it are physically located at the beginning of the disk (so we did the defragmentation). Compress the disk with the expectation of installing programs, and to always have a place on it. In general, the disk should always be 20% free. So, back to the topic: The C: \ drive will shrink after compression.
  • After compression, we have an unplaced area of the right size. Now we will try to make a new section. Click the unallocated area with the right button and click on the "Create volume" item.
  • In a new window, click on "next". In the "Size" field, leave the current size (if you want to create not one but two or three sections - then you can adjust the size at your discretion). The drive must be assigned the letter D. All disks have an alphabetic designation.
  • Now you will be asked to format the disk. First, specify the file system type - FAT32 or NTFS. You can also type "Volume label" - an arbitrary name. For example, "My Movies". We press "further", and then on "it is ready".

At you all turned out. To make sure of this, go to the "Explorer" and see how your disks look. On idea now their two - c and d. Congratulations on the successful completion of the task.
