How to choose an overlock? Basics and recommendations

Overlock is a sewing device, which serves to handle the edge of the product. Not so long ago such a device could be afforded exclusively by professional seamstresses, and an ordinary person was not familiar with this. If in your life sewing is allocated a significant enough place, then you know about such a machine. Overlock is quite capable to cope with such delicate fabrics as silk, chiffon and jersey. It is indispensable in the processing of loose fabrics, since it immediately makes an edge-wound seam. When sewing knitted fabrics, it allows you to make a soft elastic seam that will not allow the product to spread further. Since such a machine is simply indispensable, there is quite a reasonable question, how to choose an overlock? Let's deal with this.

Choosing an overlock involves a lot of difficulties. But there are moments worth considering. Most overlocks have a differential transponder - this item is indispensable for working with silk and viscose. Due to the fact that these fabrics are quite gliding, they are constantly crumpled under the claw of traditional sewing machines. With the aid of a differential transponder, the fabric is evenly advanced by means of two fabric engines, which greatly simplifies the grinding of parts from fabrics having a very smooth surface. Using a differential transponder, you can get quite interesting effects, but this advantage is not the last, the machine is able to simultaneously accommodate the fabric when sewing. But that's not all about how to choose an overlock.

Until recently, these machines were heavily deprived of accessories, in comparison with conventional sewing machines. However, now eminent manufacturers have greatly increased the number of accessories that help the overlock work much better. Many eminent brands produce a lot of additional accessories for overlocks, for example, various paws: edging, guides, scalers and others. It is worthwhile to dwell on them a little, because they often need to be bought together with the car. These accessories also affect how to choose an overlock.

You can list the items that are offered with some five-model models:

  • Universal device for taping. This can be useful in order to trim the cutouts of sweaters.
  • The embroidery foot is designed to add beautiful decorative effects.
  • The assembly foot is useful if you need to sew two layers of fabric, the bottom of which will be in the assembly.
  • The leader of the seam is needed for their professional execution.
  • The foot is for uniform and accurate stowage of the protectors.
  • Universal foot intended for sewing rubber bands and braid.

When deciding how to choose an overlock, you need to know that it can work at two or three speeds. Slow sewing is best used for fine sewing operations, and fast for simple work. Modern models are often equipped with a display. Such devices can accompany your work with various text advice.

The speed and simplicity of its service can be considered an indicator of high-quality performance of an overlock. Before choosing any particular model, it is worth paying attention to its controls. They should have good access, there should not be any problems with the choice of the program, and the ways of supplying the threads should be foreseeable as well as possible. At the moment the most popular models are Pfaff 4752, Family 244D, Brother 3034D.

You should understand that you can not unequivocally answer the question of which overlock to choose, but you can use the advice given above.
