How is the subject and predicate agreed? Dash between them

Subject: "Subject and predicate" begin to learn from the second class. But is it so easy to learn? Can you easily answer the question of how the subject and predicate are coordinated among themselves, or when there is a dash between them? If not, read this article.

The main feature of any proposal is the existence of a grammatical basis, that is, the predicate and subject or one of them.

In the sentence, the subject answers the question "what?" or who?" And can be expressed by the noun of the nominative, and also by another part of speech in the meaning of the noun.

The subject that is the main member of the sentence, as well as the grammatical subject, designates the actor, though not always. For example, you're combed.

The predicate (predicate) answers the questions "what to do?" Or "what to do?" And is what is said in the sentence about the subject: the sign, the action, the quality of the object, its quantity or condition.

Dash between subject and predicate set in the following cases:

- if they are expressed by the numerative name in the nominative case. Twice eight to sixteen;

- if one of the main terms is expressed by an indefinite verb or numerative, which stands in the nominative case, and the second - by the noun of the nominative case;

- if they are expressed by an indefinite verb. To teach a fool - do not spare a fist;

- if the subject and the predicate are expressed by the noun of the nominative case. Paris - the capital

Between a predicate and a subject there is no dash in the following cases:

- if the subject is expressed in the sentence by a personal pronoun: I am a lawyer.

- if the role of the predicate is fulfilled by the adjective: The child is fresh and pure, like an angel from the sky.

- if the predicate is preceded by a particle not, an introductory word or a comparative union: Money is not happiness. The sky is like a river. He seems to be the sweetest man.

Dashes are always put before the words: this, here it is, means, which attach the predicate to the subject: Speech is a mirror of the human soul. To love is to live for a loved one.

In an incomplete sentence, a dash can stand in place of a verbal predicate: The lake beckons us with a mirror, the sea with infinity, and the river with rapidity.

Harmonization of subject and predicate

  • With the subject, which is expressed in an adverb, particle, union or interjection, the predicate is put in the singular: "Why?" Was most often heard in his speech.
  • With the subject, which is expressed by a combination of its own and common names, the predicate is coordinated with the proper name: Sidorov's secretary brought a report to the head.
  • With the subject, which is expressed numerically, with the noun of the genitive case, the predicate is used in the plural, if necessary, emphasize the activity of each of the subjects (270 students from all regional schools participated in the Olympiad), in the singular, if it is necessary to emphasize the integrity of the subjects (in the olympiad participated 27 students).
  • In the case of pronouns, there is nothing that, something predicate, standing in the past tense, is put in the form of the middle genus of the singular: Something big fell from the roof.
  • With negative, questioning, indefinite pronouns, someone, no one who puts a predicate in a masculine gender singular: Someone in a white shirt entered the classroom.
  • If the subject is expressed by collective nouns, for example, junk, children, which denote a set of objects or persons as a whole, the predicate is used in the singular. In the closet hung different junk.
  • With the subject, which is expressed by the pronoun or noun of the nominative with the pronoun or substantive noun, the predicate is placed only in the plural: The teacher and the disciples together spent all their free time.

I think, now you know how the subject and the predicate are coordinated, and can help your children learn. Good luck!
