How expressionism manifests in painting
Expressionism in art is a trend that arose in the 20th century in Europe. In Latin, "expressio" means "expression." This current was so popular in the twenties that it captured all areas of art and was vividly manifested in painting, literature, music, theater, architecture and cinematography.
Expressionism in painting was based on subjective sensations and fantasies that arise in the authors of works. Artists through their work transmitted their emotional state, which was characterized by spiritual confusion, pessimism, despair and petty-bourgeois rebellion. The main principles of the flow were a conscious distortion of the real world, giving objects exaggerated and angular forms. Thus, the authors tried to get the audience to empathize, cause them real fear and a negative attitude to the brutal reality.
Expressionism in painting was very vividly expressed thanks to its ancestors: a group of German artists of the association "Most" and "The Blue Horseman". And later their followers: VV Kandinsky, Vincent Van Gogh, James Ensor, E. Barlach, P. Picasso, Edward Munch, M. Shagal, P. Klee and others - tried in their dramatic works to express their attitude to what is happening, Some works had a clear anti-war orientation (J. Gros, O. Dix).
All the vices of being, the ugliness and unsolvable contradictions of reality caused the Expressionists feelings of anxiety, irritation, disgust, which they transferred to their canvases with the help of hypertrophied forms, angular and twisted lines, dark scale, rough and fast strokes.
Expressionism in painting is an opportunity to show through your emotions the attitude to something. Having a delicate and sensitive nature, the artists try to bring their vision and experiences to the audience with the help of artistic images . Experiments with color and shapes, the search for new images continue in our days.
