Hero City Volgograd. Volgograd coat of arms: history and description

The emblem of the city is an emblem approved by the government, which displays the elements that distinguish the given locality from other similar ones. These can be swords, shields, fields, fortresses - in a word, what is characteristic of a certain locality. It can also contain historical elements. For example, the new coat of arms of Volgograd is decorated with the Order. He points out that the city has been given the title of hero. However, this is a bit later. Before I begin to describe the coat of arms of Volgograd, I would like to say a few words about the settlement itself, in order to better understand the meaning of the symbols depicted on the state emblem.

Short introduction to the city

Hero-city Volgograd is located in the south-east of Russia in the lower reaches of the Volga River. It has more than 1 million inhabitants. From 1274 to 1377 on the site of Volgograd was the Horde settlement, in 1589 Tsaritsyn was founded here. It was then that the first coat of arms of Volgograd was officially approved. The name changed in 1925. Then the settlement became Stalingrad, and in 1961 it was renamed to Volgograd. Since 1965, he proudly bears the title of a heroic city. In 1968, a new coat of arms was adopted, which was approved on March 4.

The current Volgograd is a flourishing, developing metropolis, a river port, a railway junction, and a cultural center. The economy is led by tractor construction, aluminum, food, and fish industry. Sights of Volgograd: hall of military glory, Memorial Memorial Complex "Mamaev Kurgan", "Alley of Heroes", Central Embankment, Museum-Reserve "Battle of Stalingrad", sculpture "Motherland Calls" and others.

Emblem of Tsaritsyn

The coat of arms of Volgograd in the past looked somewhat different. Since 1730 it was used for military banners. It represented the banner of heraldry, the crown stood majestically above. In the center, two fish of the sturgeon family lying crosswise were depicted. They were painted on a red background.

In 1854, they adopted the official coat of arms of the city. It was approved by Nicholas I. It was divided into two fields: blue was on top, red was from below. In the upper part was a stone tower. On a red background, a sterlet was depicted, the fishing of which was carried out on a large scale. And the blue part was symbolized by the Saratov emblem. A little later, the imperial crown and an oak wreath were added . These attributes testified to the status of the provincial city.

Postwar years

In 1965, the question arose about creating a new coat of arms. This was due to great changes. After the end of the Second World War, the city was given the title of Hero. Naturally, such an event should have been displayed on the main emblem. In 1968, the coat of arms of Volgograd looked like this: a red-blue background was left on it, but they were interchanged, and the order, gear and snob of wheat were added. The upper part epitomized the war years. On the red background (the blood of dead people and their courage) depicts the Order of the Hero City, and on the blue (sky) - gear (industrial development), from which germinated wheat. The latter is a symbol of the wealth and abundance of the earth. The blue and red fields are separated by a green stripe - the ribbon of the medal "For the Defense of Stalingrad."

New ideas

At the beginning of the 21st century, proposals were made for small changes in the emblem. The coat of arms of Volgograd was suggested to be supplemented with a soldier of the Red Army and Tsaritsynsky regiment, returning to the previous image with sturgeons. The order was to be moved to the lower part and framed with ribbons or an oak wreath. Another option: a woman with a sword on a red background, symbolizing the war, and at her foot - crossed two sturgeon. However, by 2015 none of the proposed arms were accepted.
