Gutuevsky Island in St. Petersburg

When Peter I studied the banks of the Neva, he was primarily interested in the possibility of Russia's mother-to-the-sea exit, and not the convenience of lands for the construction of a future metropolis. The river delta in the place where St. Petersburg was later founded was a marshy, sparsely populated area with a multitude of channels and islands.

The islands of St. Petersburg

Therefore, it is no accident today that the cultural capital of our country is called the Northern Venice. The most part of this amazingly beautiful city is spread on the islands. In total, according to 1864, there were one hundred and one, but as a result of the most various construction works there were thirty-four. And this number is constantly changing. Some channels of the Neva are falling asleep, so the islands unite, while others appear new. Many of them with their western extremities directly reach the Baltic Sea. Therefore, uninformed tourists, strolling, can unexpectedly find themselves on a sandy beach or on a pier. If you ask local residents to name the ten most famous land sites, then most likely, this list will not get Guguevsky Island.

general information

150 years after the founding of St. Petersburg there was a desolate place. And only since the last quarter of the last century, after the construction of the Sea Canal and the transfer of the St. Petersburg Commercial Port, trade has revived on the island. It began to build gradually.

To the "New Port" at the entrance to the Neva, in which large ships moored, they laid the Portovaya-Putilovka branch of the Nikolayevskaya Railway. In the twentieth century, Gutuevsky Island (St. Petersburg) significantly increased territorially. Today its area is more than three square meters with a width of four meters. It is also joined by the Small Razvy and Smooth Island. Three bridges, including a railway bridge, are connected to the mainland.

History

Vitsasaari, which in translation means "shrubby" ... That's exactly at one time the Finns called Gutuevsky Island (St. Petersburg). Which district it was in the tsarist years, it is impossible to say for sure. When Peter the First founded the city, the names began to change. Everything depended on the name of the one who bought a particular plot of land. For his relatively short history, he changed many names. Before the foundation of St. Petersburg it was called Vitsasaari (Vitsasaari). On the city plan of 1716 it is listed as Unsettled, and on the map of 1717, published in France, this place was designated under the name of Saint Catherine. Later it was renamed the Round Island (from 1737 to 1793). At the same time they called Primorsky. The last name was due to the fact that it is located next to the Gulf of Finland. Among others was Novosiltsov, in honor of the rich lieutenant.

The present name was fixed after the island from the middle of the 18th century, when the Olonets merchant-shipbuilder Konon Guttuev (Khugtunen), who arrived in St. Petersburg, got rich and acquired this island.

Previously, there was a landmark channel. He divided the Gutuevsky Island into two parts - southern and northern. It was dug in the 19th century to drain the land. There was also an embankment, which, however, did not repeat the bend of the boundary, but had a direction directly to the Sea Canal.

Even before the revolution, they began to fall asleep. The first part of the canal on the section from the river Ekateringofki to the street. Gapsalskaya was buried, and already in the 50s of the last century the whole canal was already drained and buried.

Construction of the port on the Gutuevsky Island

In the 1880s a lot of construction began here. As a result, a port appeared. For him in the 1899-1903-ies erected and the building of customs. The author of the project was the architect Kurdyumov.

After the construction of the port, life here has changed dramatically. It was through Ekateringofku built two bridges, created by the brawlers - folding places with a pier.
Here in the barrel was stored fish. It was mostly herring. About two hundred katalytes moved barrels. Retail trade here did not lead, fish sold only in bulk. It was thanks to the appearance of the port and the island of Gutuevsky in St. Petersburg became known to the townspeople.

How to get there

Photos of the then port buildings can be seen in the city museum. During the war, several shells hit here. As a result, part of the port building was destroyed, but later it was rebuilt. This is clearly visible, since on the completed part of the brick is still light compared to the rest of the array.

An idle person who comes here to stare at industrial buildings or wander, in a busy port will not be able to get. Yes it is not necessary. But beyond its borders there are many interesting things, and these sights (for example, the Epiphany Church, which we will talk about below) can and even need to be seen on the island of Gutuevsky in St. Petersburg. How to get to it, you can check with the old-timers. You can get there by the Riga Avenue, the completion of which is the bridge, thrown through Ekateringofku. He crosses the other side of Gapsalskaya Street, which received such a name from the Estonian town of Haapsalu. If you go from the Kanonersky Island, you need to get to the submarine tunnel.

Gutuevsky Island in St. Petersburg is located at the mouth of the Great Neva. Today it belongs territorially to the Kirovsky district. You can get there by bus (numbers 135, 49, 66, 67, 71), as well as by shuttle bus going to Gutuevsky Island.

St. Petersburg. Temple: how to reach

At the end of the 19th century, in connection with the appearance of the port, everyone who had at least some attitude to his work settled: sailors, customs officers, dockers, officials, craftsmen, etc. All of them were believers, and therefore they needed A place where they could pray. Therefore, according to the subscription sheet, they started collecting money for the church. The most significant amount - one hundred thousand rubles - was given by the manufacturer Voronin, the owner of the weaving factory. He asked permission for a device in the church of the family tomb. The temple was erected on Dvinskaya Street by Ekateringofka. It was built by his engineer Kosyakov-senior with the participation of Pravdzik. The Epiphany Church was built for eight years: from 1891 to 1899.

Description of the temple

The architect made an attempt to combine the Old Russian and Byzantine styles. The Epiphany Church is the main object for tourists visiting Gutuevsky Island (St. Petersburg). The temple was closed in 1935, it housed a soap factory. As a result, the internal premises were completely spoiled. In the middle of the 70s of the last century the facade of the church was a very miserable sight, depressing the former parishioners with sooty walls and a rusty dome. Later in it have arranged warehouses of Frunzensky department store. Everything changed in the 90s of the last century, when the Epiphany Church was returned to the ROC.

There are three thrones in the church. One of them is dedicated to the Epiphany, the other - to the defender of travelers and sailors Nikolay miracle worker and John Postnik. In the temple stood a unique altar, completely made of snow-white marble. He looked as if he had been carved from ivory. Today, only the steps to the altar have been preserved.

From majolica the Royal Gates were executed . Inside the Epiphany Church was all painted. To date, it has been decided to restore the gates and the altar. Epiphany church was decided to dedicate to the miraculous rescue of the prince: a policeman attacked Nicholas during the journey of the imperial family in a Japanese city to stab him. In the basement there is still a burial place for the family members of the Voronin factory owner.

Other significant objects

In addition to the church, Gutuevsky Island is famous for the fact that it houses the Baltic Customs, the administrative building of the St. Petersburg Sea Port, the University of Water Communications.

An interesting structure on the island can be called the House of Culture of Seamen. It began to be built in the 30s of the last century, and was completed 20 years later. As a result, the building turned into an incredible mixture of architectural styles.

In a small square on which Gutuevsky Island is located, there is a monument dedicated to sailors and ships of the Baltic Shipping Company.

Objects of architecture of past centuries

Those who are engaged in the history of architecture, it will be interesting to look at the buildings of the former bone-baking and glue-making factories. Their usual corps today looks almost like knight castles with crenellated towers, arches, loopholes, gratings ...

Small and Big Rare Isles

If you look from the Gutuev Bridge to the south, then right in the middle of Ekateringofki you can see a very small piece of land. It's the Small Rare Isle. West of it was his brother - Big, but today he does not exist anymore, because as a result of falling asleep the channels he disappeared from the maps. Today he is considered part of the Gutuevsky Island.

Such a very unusual name has its own history. Even in Peter's time, merchants from Ostashkov began to come to St. Petersburg. Here they traded fish. Very soon they became rich, they eventually began to deliver their goods to the imperial court. And on the fortified state began to buy land, including several islets. So there appeared the Big Slippery and the Small Sharp. Whence such names?

Merchants were known as Rezvov, and, apparently, the island is so named by analogy with their "quickness". Interestingly, but the most active of them - Terenty Sergeevich Rezvov eventually became the title of the Hereditary honorary citizen of Petersburg, and one of his grandsons became a nobleman and changed his surname to Razvy. Now this island has occupied military facilities, so it is impossible to get on it. It can be seen only from the bridge.
