Green fly: description, photo. How to get rid of green flies?

In the warm season near the cesspools, cattle cemeteries and large garbage heaps you can meet hordes of flies. Among them is a green fly, also called "lucily" or "green carrion". Its name is not for nothing, as it feeds on carrion, and also lays eggs in the corpses of animals.

Flounder carrion

Externally, the green fly is pretty beautiful: its green color with a golden or copper shade casts a metallic luster, the eyes are red, and the muzzle is silver-metallic in color. The insect's body is slightly longer than that of an ordinary housefly, and reaches 15 mm in length.

Below in the illustration, an ordinary green fly is presented, the photo of which conveys all the overflows on the back and muzzle.

She dwells almost everywhere - in Europe, in Siberia, Asia and America.

Reproduction

A green fly lays about 150 eggs at a time, for a day their number can reach five hundred pieces. To protect the offspring from bright sunlight, to which it is very sensitive, the female searches for deep folds or holes in the flesh that fell, and if possible can be taken under the corpse to lay eggs.

The insect is completely unaffected by other scavengers, such as ants, which carry newly laid fly eggs. Her offspring is so numerous that such small theft will not affect the general population.

Larvae

Larvae of green flies hatch from eggs a day after laying. The size is small, whitish with a small black head, which has a mouth opening and two sharp hook-shaped protuberances with which the larva controls: pulls forward, sticks into rotting flesh, hides. In some sources, it is suggested that these are the modified jaws of the larva, by which it grasps microscopic pieces of flesh. In fact, this is not so. Its larva uses its hooks exclusively as an engine system. Punching them into the flesh, it pulls the body, so it has the ability to move.

How to eat larvae

Bite the pieces of solid food the larva can not yet. How does it feed? During the research, an experiment was set up: pieces of lightly dried meat were placed in two flasks, larvae of a green fly were planted on one of them. A few days later the piece of meat on which the larvae lived became so softened that it resembled a liquid gruel. At the same time, a piece of meat in the second flask did not change in any way. That is, the larvae, secreting a special secret from the mouth, dilute solid food, turning it into a kind of broth, and then they feed on this broth.

It turns out that they digest food before eating it. In addition, hook-shaped outgrowths on the head of the larva also participate in the process of such digestion. As the larva pierces hooks into the flesh, it releases digestive juice. It is absorbed into the meat in the places where the hooks were attached.

Having reached a certain age, the larva buries into the ground, where it pupates. After a while the lid of the cocoon bursts, and from under the ground appears a young green fly. A little drying up the wings in the sun, she rushes in search of rotting flesh.

Green flies benefit

Benefit, which brings a fly-carnal, it is difficult to overestimate:

  • An adult feeds on carrion;
  • The larvae of the fly accelerate the process of decay and decomposition of dead flesh.

Thus, the green fly acts as an environmental health man, destroying decaying remains and accelerating the process of decomposition.

It is also known that with the help of the larvae of this insect, surgeons during the Second World War cleansed the wounds from rotting flesh.

The harm caused by the green fly

Nevertheless, the harm caused by the green fly is also evident. Constantly upholstered among decaying remains, on cesspools, it becomes the carrier of disease-causing bacteria. Flies are carriers of such diseases as:

  • dysentery;
  • Typhus;
  • polio;
  • brucellosis;
  • Intestinal miasis;
  • Helminthiasis and others.

For these insects, there is no particular difference, how fresh the meat is, in which it will lay its eggs. For this, both the half-decomposed corpse of an animal and a fresh piece of meat on your dinner table will do. When heat treated, eggs, of course, will perish, but, you see, this is little consolation. In addition, many housewives try to salt raw meat, at the risk of bringing into their bodies all kinds of bacteria and green fly eggs, some of which are able to settle in the intestines, causing an intestinal mias.

Those who are engaged in breeding of domestic animals, there are cases when, it would seem, a small wound, received by an animal by negligence, turned into a big problem. She did not heal for a long time, the animal began to hurt and sometimes even died. The green fly is responsible for this, laying eggs there. The larvae hatched from the eggs turned the wound into a digestible compote, thereby worsening the condition of the animal.

There is a case where a patient of a Canadian clinic has a green fly laying eggs in the eyes and nose. One hundred and twenty larvae emerged from them. At the time of detection, each larva has already reached a size of about 5 millimeters. This suggests that after the eggs of the green fly were laid off, it took about one and a half to two days. When entering the clinic, no larvae were found in the body of the woman, which means infection directly in the institution. However, the doctors withdrew all responsibility for the incident, arguing that there were no windows in the ward of the woman, and the fly could not penetrate the clinic at all.

Where the garland-carnal flies

Green flies in an apartment, as a rule, do not take root. Even if one such person flies into the house out of curiosity, the conditions for her life will not suit her. The green fly needs dead rotting flesh to lay eggs. Therefore, live carrion near the cattle graveyards, but they are found in the garden on flowering plants, and also near pens for keeping domestic cattle.

If suddenly you notice that there are green flies in the house, this may mean that, perhaps, somewhere in the basement or in the immediate vicinity is a dead animal - a cat, a rat, a dog, etc.

How to destroy green flies

Do not wait for the green flies to fill the whole space around. They should be disposed of immediately, as soon as you notice at least one adult. But before you get rid of green flies, you need to eliminate the cause of their appearance, that is, find the rotting flesh that could attract these insects, and throw it away from your home as far as possible.

As a rule, these measures are enough to get rid of unpleasant insects in the house. But it is worth remembering that flies live near pens for livestock, and this is fraught with the fact that insects can annoy animals, lay eggs in their ears, nose, accidental wounds, etc. In this case, regular processing of premises for livestock.

To competently combat the green fly, it is better to contact specialists from Sanitary and Epidemiological Station who will quickly and correctly eradicate insects.

Methods of pest control:

  • Fumigation - elimination by means of poisonous aerosols, gels, smoke grenades , etc .;
  • Disinfestation - chemical treatment of the main places of insect gathering.

Prevention

Of course, the problem is always easier to prevent than to eliminate. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain basic sanitary and hygienic conditions:

  • In time to get rid of household waste in the house;
  • Do not leave naked food on the table;
  • Place on the windows a mosquito net ;
  • Regularly clean the pens for pets;
  • To examine animals for wounds, in order to avoid infection by the larvae of the green fly;
  • Dung heaps to process by biothermal means;
  • In time to utilize the dead bodies of dead animals, as well as pests such as rats, moles and others;
  • Disinfecting places with insecticides.

Tangerine essential oil scares off flies, causing them paralysis of the limbs. Bouquets of these flowers, hung in a room for livestock or standing in a vase in the apartment, will help to get rid of annoying flies for a long time.
