Encephalogram of the brain: why is this procedure necessary?

Passage of standard procedures and the delivery of various tests for us have become almost common, but the brain encephalogram has never been prescribed to most patients. In addition, many do not know what it is and what it explores. Especially often, parents of small children are worried about this procedure.

In fact, the brain encephalogram is an absolutely safe and painless procedure: special sensors are placed on the patient's head, which read electrical impulses and record them in the form of a curve. This study is often used to establish or confirm certain diagnoses in neurosurgery and neurology. So, the basis for making the EEG of the brain can be a number of reasons:

  • Frequent syncope;
  • Vegetovascular dystonia;
  • hypertension;
  • Osteochondrosis of the cervical spine;
  • Craniocerebral trauma;
  • Headaches of unknown origin;
  • Sleep disorders;
  • Convulsions of unknown origin;
  • Suspected neoplasms in the membranes of the brain;
  • epilepsy;
  • Previous operations on the brain;
  • Disorders of cerebral circulation;
  • Neurotic disorders;
  • Delay in mental or speech development of unknown origin;
  • Bouts of unusual behavior.

Contrary to popular belief, there is no reason to believe that the cerebral encephalogram can help diagnose psychiatry, that is, to confirm or deny it with a disease such as schizophrenia will not work.

There are no contraindications to EEG, however, some special requirements are imposed on patients. So, at the time of the study, the patient's hair should be washed and thoroughly dried. On them there should not be laying means, also within days before carrying out of procedure it is impossible to take alcohol, caffeine, guarauva.

The EEG of the brain in children does not differ from a similar procedure in adults. The doctor will ask the patient to sit comfortably in the chair and not move after the start of recording. During the procedure, the doctor may ask you to close and open your eyes, breathe deeply, and turn on the flickering light. All this is needed to understand how the patient's brain processes the information, and whether there are no sites working incorrectly. The only difference is that it is not enough for an adult child to explain why this procedure is being carried out, so parents will have to include fantasy so that he does not get scared, for example, to say that this is such a new and interesting game.

In addition to this research, there is also an MRI and ultrasound in the doctors' arsenal, an X-ray study of the cranium. But they are used for slightly different purposes than the cerebral encephalogram, and do not give the information that can be obtained with the help of EEG. But the whole complex may be required, especially if the problem is rather complicated, and doctors are not sure of the diagnosis. But do not worry - the EEG of the brain is absolutely harmless for any age and can be carried out as often as you want.
