Déjà vu - what is this? Proof of many lives or a psychiatric symptom?

French words often sound nice, you can say, literally caress the rumor. And after repeated use in glamorous sources become even more attractive. But behind the beautiful words often hide a bad meaning. Consider the example of the French expression "deja vu", what does this mean?

Examples from life

The term déjà vu is literally "already seen." Those who are familiar with this feeling describe it as a shocking sensation of recognizing something that in principle should not be familiar in any way.

For example, you first came to England. You look around the cathedral, and suddenly it seems to you that you have already visited this place. Or maybe you are discussing politics with friends and suddenly realize that this is not the first time - the same friends, the same dinner, the same topic. And the feeling is very intrusive.

Why?

Déjà vu - what is this? The phenomenon is quite complex, and there are quite a few theories of the emergence of this phenomenon. For example, the Swiss Arthur Funkhauser considers the phenomenon itself to be very heterogeneous. That is, depending on the features of manifestation of deja vu, several varieties of the phenomenon can be distinguished. Only in this case the phenomenon can be interpreted. The first described example should be called déjà visite, already visited. And the second - déjà vecu (previously experienced).

Epilepsy is not glamorous

Almost 70 percent of the world's population claim that at least once in their life they experienced one form of deja vu.

What does it mean? Young people from 15 to 25 have the most experience in this area. It seems that they have deja vu - the fake, most likely, just the influence of the suggestion of mass culture. Can we draw conclusions about previous lives? Not everything in relation to the phenomenon is so connected with mysticism. Frequent déjà vu is a clinically proven symptom of epilepsy in the temporal lobes of the brain. So before you talk about your experience in a circle of strangers, make sure that there are no psychiatrists among them. But seriously, this is considered a symptom only if you often appear. In patients with epilepsy, he appears during an attack between seizures. So there is no special romance in deja vu. What is it in your case, only an expert can understand, but if you do not notice any oddities, then you should not contact psychiatrists.

About theories

Because deja vu happens to both healthy and sick people, the reasons are very hotly debated. Some psychoanalysts believe that this is just a fantasy, a way for a person to attract attention to himself.

Others believe that this is a disparity between the brain of the past and the present, resulting from a temporary or permanent failure. There are also supporters of the theory of many lives, which explain deja vu as memories of past lives. Jung's supporters will talk about interacting with the collective unconscious, the science fiction writers - about parallel universes. Modern scientific data are not enough to give a clear explanation.

Let's sum up. What does the word "deja vu" mean? A special form of human experience, when not seen is taken as seen. There is a lot of hypothesis, there is a connection with mental illnesses, nature is not completely clear.
