Cutting shotgun Remington 700 - description, reviews

As the all-knowing "Wikipedia" says, Remington 700 is a shop rifle manufactured in the US by Remington Arms. There are many modifications of this weapon for a different cartridge. The standard version is 7.62 x 51 mm - the NATO version. Technically, this carbine is a rifle, in which the slide is a longitudinal-sliding swivel type. The capacity of the holder depends on the caliber, it can hold 3 to 5 ammunition.

This carbine does not need advertising

The Remington 700 bolt-action carbines have become truly legendary. USM seven-hundred model is used on sniper rifles of the US Army M-24 and sniper rifles of the Marine Corps US M-40. Agree that this fact means something. The popularity of these weapons is facilitated by a large number of components and mechanisms that are produced by third-party firms.

What is this weapon?

Remington 700 rifles as hunting weapons are manufactured by an American company since 1962. As you can see, the history of the carbine in question has been counting for more than 50 years, and this is already a term, one could even say, a lifetime. For its accuracy and reliability, as well as low cost, "Remington 700" almost immediately gained numerous admirers. Already in 5 years after the beginning of production of the rifle of the 700th model it was possible to get in any weapon shop of the United States. However, with the release of more sophisticated samples, interest in this carbine began to fade.

There would be no happiness, but misfortune helped

So Remington 700 would remain a good, reliable, accurate, but yielded to the market more advanced new models of weapons, if not for one "but" - the war in Vietnam. As well as the AR-15 sports rifle, which lost its popularity (it was called M-16 for military classification), the Remington 700 hunting rifle actually gave it a start in life. As is sometimes the case, the hunting weapon, which we considered to be accidentally, became a sniper. And it is not customary to take bad weapons for war ... Although in history there were ...

From the very beginning of the military operations, with raids into the humid tropical jungle with a very aggressive environment, it quickly became clear that sniper rifles of the Marine Corps were unable to meet the requirements of accurate shooting in a tropical climate. Therefore, in 1966, the US Army Command announced an urgent competition to replace the obsolete M-14 carbine. The military voiced the main condition of the contest: the new weapon must hit the target in the conditions of the tropics from a distance of 800 meters with a single shot. Strangely enough, the winner was an ordinary hunting rifle, sold in all stores in the country. In early April of the same year, the military, not waiting for the final test results, adopted the Marine Corps Remington 700 SPS under the M-40 index.

And this is what happened

However, the troubles did not take long: one by one, numerous "design flaws" began to emerge, because of which the Remington 700 SPS Tactical (an army version of the carbine) was almost abandoned. And all because of the fact that they did not finish the test, and as folk wisdom says, you'll hurry ... The humid hot climate, the abundance of plant mud, fast-growing mold forced snipers to thoroughly clean and lubricate each weapon before each battle, so that it would not fail in the very Inopportune moment. The wooden bed "thanks" to the abundance of moisture swelled so much that the wood had to be cut off with a knife all the time. All-pervasive mud fell between the trunk and the bed. This provoked rapid corrosion, and slightly raised the barrel relative to the forearm, therefore, led to a change in the ballistic characteristics of the weapon. In the canal of the trunk shells appeared, and on the outside the carabiner, which was poorly oiled after the battle, quickly rusted. It was not possible to find spare parts for repair in the field. By the way, the same situation arose with the M-16 assault rifle.

The horses on the ferry do not change, at least this time

However, it was too late to change the Remington 700 Tactical carbine, because the state money allocated for the contest, as well as the purchase of new weapons, had already been spent. And not to "get round the neck" from the American senators, who like to like to earn a rating on such things (do not forget that the Vietnamese war did not support the country's population), the military decided not to change weapons, but only to modernize. The carbine received a special water repellent coating with camouflage coloring, a deeper chrome coating of internal parts and mechanisms, and the trunk was made of stainless steel, butt and a box of plastic. The upgraded rifle Remington 700 has received a new index - M40A1. This modification proved to be quite successful, it is serving in the US Army to this day.

Interesting historical facts

The fact is the first - for the test tests in the Vietnam War, the military ordered 700 carbines of the 700 series.

The second fact is that the modernized M40A1 rifle is assembled not on the basis of RemingtonArms, but in Quantico (Texas), based on marines, and specially trained gunsmiths. Snipers are not allowed to disassemble the carbine. According to the rules, every instance of the weapon, regardless of whether it was fired from it or not, must be sent to the weapons workshops every six months to replace parts and maintenance.

It's worth it

Due to the success of this carbine, the Ministry of Defense drew attention to it from marines. After a full series of tests, Remington 700 Varmint with a number of improvements for army snipers received the military index of M-24. This version of the carbine is greatly simplified, so that the shooter is allowed to disassemble it and carry out repairs in the field. Today, this weapon is produced in two army calibers: 223 Rem (standard for NATO assault rifles) and 308 (standard for NATO sniper rifles), as well as in all hunting calibers of the United States and the sports standard 22-250 Rem.

In addition, Remington 700 SPS Varmint (308 Win) carbines are used in police special forces around the world. Reviews of sportsmen and hunters about this rifle are the most enthusiastic, however, most likely, it would have been forgotten long ago, do not fall into the hands of marines in the Vietnam War.

Finally

To sum it up, let's say that the Remington bolt bolt rifle does not need advertising. It can easily be called legendary. The shock-trigger mechanism of the seven-hundred model is identical to the mechanism of the army sniper rifle M-24. It has the ideal, as for rifled weapons, a very short and dry descent, in which it is possible to adjust the pulling force of the trigger. USM seven-hundred model is considered classic, it is used even in sports for competitions in high-precision shooting. There are many different modifications to each of these Remington 700 variants, depending on the material of the barrel used, buttstock, receiver, and metal surface treatment. In total there are 17 different modifications of this model.

The popularity of the carbine we examined is not limited to the United States. For example, in Russia there is even a club of fans of rifles "Remington". On the shelves of our arms stores a huge assortment of this model is presented in all modifications. The interested person can get both the simplest version (with a price of 30 thousand rubles) and specialized weapons. For example, a copy that is in service with the US police (this model will cost from 160 thousand rubles).
